If You Can’t Say Something Nice…

…then show a picture of something you just don’t see every day.

That should qualify.

This weekend I will not be in Atlanta for GaFilk, nor will I be in Florida tonight for the latest SpaceX Falcon 9 launch attempt and attendant NASA Social, nor will I be in Florida on Sunday for the Disney World Marathon (all good intentions and braggadocio to the contrary), nor was I at this past week’s NASA/Smithsonian Social in Washington, nor will I be at the NASA/Smithsonian Social in late January, nor will I be at the NASA “1-Year Mission” Social in Houston later this month, nor will I be at the NASA Social at Vandenberg AFB at the end of the month. (For the record, it’s not that I’m applying and not getting accepted, it that I’m not able to actually travel to these events, so I’m not applying to begin with.) Nor will I be flying (i.e., in the left seat at the pointy end of the plane), nor will I be doing an awful lot of other things.

On the one hand, one of my heroes, Coach John Wooden, said:

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

Smart man. Successful man. I actually got to meet him for about two seconds once.

On the other hand, there was a T-shirt/poster in the 60’s that showed two buzzards sitting on a wire, and the one buzzard says:

“To hell with patience, I’m going to go out and kill something!”

Which point of view is correct? Either? Neither? Or a bit of both but a lot of everything else as well?

Times like this I sometimes wished that I drank.

Y’all doing anything fun, interesting, or exciting for the weekend? Tell me about it in the comments.

  1. I’m sorry for the projects you won’t be able to pursue. As for the weekend — while not earth-shattering, a movie is on our agenda. Night at the Museum. Next weekend my daughter and I are going to an event at the Poe Museum celebrating Edgar Allan Poe’s birthday. We’re excited about that one.

    • The Poe event sounds great – don’t drink the amontillado! Having not seen any of the earlier films in the series we’ll skip Night at the Museum, but friends who have seen it seemed to have liked it a lot. Enjoy yourselves!

Like the pic. Glad you aren’t doing all those events as it would make me feel even more inadequate.
Things for this weekend? Wrote a couple thousand more words for the latest Princelings series book, Willoughby the Narrator. I’m not supposed to be writing it this month, but I got the call do it on Thursday and I havent been able to stop… particularly as the real Willoughby died Thursday evening my time and I feel kinda superstititous about waking up with the call to write…. am I weird?
Wrote my flash fiction today, too – ta-da!
Just looked outside and I think I’ve seen Comet Lovejoy – hurrah! Very misty blob, not nearly as precise as your pics, but then my eyes even through the binoculars are not what they used to be!
Saw The Theory of Everything yesterday, and now I think I really ought to read that copy of Brief History of Time that’s been on my shelf for… 20 years? :O
    That busy enough for you?
Oh, and finished reading Skellig. 5 stars.
Happy weekend to you and yours 🙂

    • Good to hear that you’ve got some writing time. I don’t think your muse is weird – when it’s time to write, go with it! I’ll keep an eye out for your flash fiction – I’ve got to try getting mine done earlier in the weeks this year.

Sounds like you’ve spotted Lovejoy! To the eye it’s just a grey, cloudy spot.

Glad to see you’re busy. Thanks for sharing!
