We’ve been to Lake Havasu a few times back in the past. Not always the best of circumstances, but I always liked the juxtaposition of the water and the desert.
I also liked the storms that would come up out there, often violent thunderstorms that were over and gone in just a few minutes, travelling off to create flash floods elsewhere.
Los Angeles is set in the desert and I’ve been here almost fifty years – but it’s faux desert, calmed by a ton of water, concrete, and freeways. The lizards, ravens, and coyotes are the last wild things.
We’ll see what this year brings. It won’t be Havasu, but in many ways, for reasons practical, spiritual, and economic, the desert might be calling.

The only thing I know about Lake Havasu is that it’s the location of the last ‘London Bridge’, which was rebuilt in about 1960 or so. The millionaire who bought it thought he was buying ‘Tower Bridge’, or so everybody assumed at the time. But hopefully it’s still enough of a tourist attraction to help him out!

I’ve been there several times – it’s odd, to say the least. The guy apparently dredged out a huge channel in the shoreline so that the bridge would have something to go over, then built a semi-tacky shopping mall around it. They run tour boats from there out onto the lake and the ride has a running, recorded commentary going about how great this guy was, making Havasu into a garden spot in the desert and a leading tourist attraction, blah, blah, blah… I was ready to jump overboard and swim back to the hotel if I had to hear about him one more time. The last time we were there was 19 years ago, so I have no idea if it’s as deserted now as it was then.
