Signs & Portents

Well, isn’t THIS just a fine fucking little nightmare!

I don’t even have words to start to express my disappointment and disgust with my fellow Americans.

Then I came out to this on the front porch this morning. It might have been an omen. Or is it a portent? Whatever.

Having the US flag ripping loose and hanging upside down seemed to be appropriate, especially with the leftover Halloween skeleton there.

Probably not quite a sign from the gods – the winds had been pretty viscious all night. Whiteman was reporting winds at 45 knots, gusting to 60 knots, with Van Nuys, Camarillo, and Burbank all reporting similar readings.

If anyone has figured out what the silver lining or bright side to this debacle is, please let me know. I’ve got nothing.

I don’t have a silver lining, but I do have an observation or two.

In Michigan, we managed a tight squeak to get our Senate candidate thru (Elissa Slotkin) by 0.3% — which is really odd, since Trump won by 1.5%. So some ticket-splitting happened.

More interestingly, both of the Dem-endorsed Michigan Supreme Court candidates won handily (2-to-1 !). These are theoretically non-partisan offices, so voters didn’t know much about them. Two different groups (one of them mine, in the sense that I’m the tech lead, mivoter.org) did a lot of voter education about them, primarily in “blue” counties — and that seems to have made a huge difference.

I expect we’ll significantly expand the reach of mivoter.org in 2026… and we can always use volunteers, technical or otherwise, in-state or otherwise. Email me at wchasroth@gmail.com if you might be interested.
