They Don’t Like These

One thing I’ve noticed in refilling the birdseed feeders is that the bottom is always full of these little, round, red seeds:

I don’t know what’s wrong with them – do they not taste good? Are they difficult to pick up? Are they hard and a pain to crack open?

It’s yet another mystery.

Maybe the squirrels will eat them? Waste not, want not!

  1. It’s milo (also known as grain sorghum). Birds really tend to hate it. I think bird seed manufacturers put it in as a filler. Larger birds, like doves or even turkeys, will eat it eventually if it’s left on the ground long enough. But I’ve never seen birds – or squirrels – eat it. If left in the feeder though it will mold but quick. Funny thing is, it’s used in gluten-free human food.
