Shanghai (Part One)

I’ve posted articles and pictures about my travel to Southampton, England, Virginia, the Grand Canyon and other places in Arizona.

In May, 2012 I had a unique opportunity to go on what I refer to as the “Three-Kids-Three-Weeks-Three-Countries” tour. Circumstances had all three of our adult children living in Asia, and there was a window of opportunity to spend (more or less) a week with each of them. While I had been overseas to Europe before, I had never been to Asia.

It was an opportunity too good to pass up, and it was spectacular!

So, in more or less chronological order, let me share some of that trip’s photos with you. (Have I ever mentioned that I take a LOT of pictures?)

After a twelve hour, non-stop flight from San Francisco to Shanghai, I arrived about 18:00 local time, just before sunset. My body, on the other hand, was adrift, its circadian rhythms demolished by the crossing of eight time zones and the international date line. I’m not sure I could have told you the time, the date, or the day of the week if my life had depended on it.

I was met at the airport by my daughter, who has lived in Shanghai for three years now, teaching English at an international high school in the Xuhui District there. She did an excellent job of getting me to my hotel, dragging my bedraggled butt out for some dinner, and giving me a quick tour of the extremely bright lights, neon, and chaos in one of the city’s many commercial districts.

After passing out for a few hours and regaining my balance (if not my bearings), I spent some time touring the grounds of the school where she teaches, waiting for her classes to get over so that we could go off sightseeing.

IMG_3391 smallThere are several shrines and pagodas around the grounds.

IMG_3399 smallThe grounds of the school contain a large forest on the site of a battle or massacre of some sort. (Sorry, I don’t remember all of the details – my daughter may correct my ignorance in the comments.)

IMG_3408 smallThe trees of the memorial forest are planted in a very precise grid. It’s both very beautiful and a little bit spooky.

IMG_3411 smallThe campus is as gorgeous and manicured as any US college that I’ve ever seen. It’s immaculate.

In the distance, a few times an hour, all of the time, I could hear what sounded like gunfire. When I later asked if there was a firing range nearby, one of my daughter’s friends said something like, “Fireworks. They were invented here, right? Chinese families will shoot off fireworks to celebrate anything. A birth, a death, a wedding, a promotion, Wednesday, a really good cup of tea — it doesn’t matter.” As someone who loves fireworks, I could get used to that kind of an attitude!

IMG_3429 smallIt doesn’t take you long to really notice that you’re not in Kansas (or Los Angeles) any more. Despite the groomed and manicured landscaping on the grounds, most of the plants are distinctly different from most anything in North America.

IMG_3432 smallThe school is extremely focused on college prep and has an emphasis on scientific and technical subjects. I don’t know how often they use the telescope, how big it is, or how much they can see through the perpetual haze and smog, but the dome’s big enough to have a pretty decent sized instrument.

You may have heard about recent issues with severe smog in several Chinese cities, including Shanghai. When I was there it wasn’t particularly smoggy, but every day it was hazy. Most days it was grey and dim for the bulk of the day, which is to be expected for a city on the coast in a semi-tropical climate.

IMG_3435 smallMany of the buildings at the school pre-date World War II, and their architecture reflects that. The school was used as an internment camp during the war. Also notice the flag. I always try to get a picture of the country’s flag when I’m traveling abroad.

IMG_3442 smallZhongxing Lake on campus, one of several. For being in the middle of one of the most densely populated spots on the planet, there is a tremendous amount of open space on campus.

IMG_9615 smallThere are koi in every pond and lake, and there are a lot of ponds and lakes. I never had any idea that they came in so many colors, sizes, and types. It’s very tranquil sitting and watching them. Of course, the second they see you they start schooling in front of you, anticipating food. I had no food to share, for which I apologize to the koi of Shanghai.

Shifting Balance Leads To Fireworks Pictures

There seems to be another subtle shift going on in my focus and priorities and one of the side effects is that this is the third or fourth day in a row where I got to 8:30 or 9:00 at night and suddenly said, “Shazbatt! I haven’t done my blog post for the day! Quick, think of something!” This balance shift may be a good thing, there’s a bit of a feeling like it might be like a log jam of sorts breaking loose (which would be good), but we’ll see.

In the meantime, a quick review of the blog contents shows that we haven’t looked at fireworks pictures in a while. I love fireworks, I love pictures of fireworks. (I take a LOT of pictures.) Since I’ve shown them in the past from Anaheim Stadium (here and here), let’s look at a bunch from Dodger Stadium, taken on July 4, 2007.

At least this particular Fourth of July at Dodger Stadium we made it through the entire program. There was a year (I don’t remember exactly which one) where they only did about four or five minutes of the show and then abruptly stopped. We were waiting forever to see what was going on, then heard the fire trucks and had the lights come back on. There was an announcement that the rest of the show had been cancelled due to the fire in the palm trees by the Union 76 station in the parking lot. Oops!

July Fourth 2013 Fireworks Photos

Ronnie and I had a most pleasant 4th of July evening at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, watching our beloved Angels come from two runs down in the ninth inning to tie it on a Josh Hamilton home run to deep, dead center (I was wearing the “shark” rally hat, much to the delight of several fans sitting nearby, so I’ll take a bit of the credit) and then win it on a two-out, walk-off single by Eric Aybar.

The game started with the unfurling of a gargantuan US flag covering most of the Anaheim Stadium outfield, as well as a flyby. Since all US military flybys have been cancelled due to sequestration, the Angels are using the Condor Squadron out of Van Nuys, a group of WWII vintage T-6 “Texan” trainers. Bravo to the Angels for this!!

Just prior to this, as we were getting some dinner, another ethical dilemma was posed while in the process of being a good Samaritan. A group of four people, probably tourists, asked me to take a picture of them posing with the field and stadium and mountains behind them. No problem! I love taking pictures for strangers!

But as I started to take their picture and the tourists were focused on me, I could clearly see the stadium churro vendor who had sidled up next to them and had taken a classic photobombing pose. He probably does this all the time and the face he was making was hilarious! But these folks might not agree, so should I zoom in and crop him out of the photo, or include him and possibly “ruin” their photo?

My solution was to shoot two pictures, one with, one without. Not exactly the wisdom of King Solomon, but it was good enough for the moment.

I have to wonder what I would do if I only had the chance to take one picture. I’m leaning toward deliberately including the photobomber in the photo. The reasoning is that I can think of almost nothing that I’ve ever done that I regret doing, but can think of many things that I’ve had the opportunity to do and backed away from and now regret not doing. As Heinlein said, “Yield to temptation, it may not pass your way again.”

Following the game we had a fantastic fireworks display and our seats were perfect for viewing it. I had brought in a small tripod and set it up with the video camera (we were in the front row of our section) and I think that the video may be the best fireworks video I’ve ever gotten.

As for the still photos, I had wanted to try setting some of the camera setting manually, similarly to how I’ve manually shot some of my simple astrophotography, but it was obvious from the start that I was doing it wrong and things weren’t going to work. So I quickly switched back to my usual setup for fireworks with manual focus but automatic shutter and iris control using the “panorama” setting.

The other problem (as you can see below) is that there was very little wind, so the smoke from the fireworks did not drift away and just got worse as the show went on. This means that any longer exposures ended up lighting up the smoke like the high beams on your car light up fog.

Regardless, it was a great show to see in person and I hope that these pictures give you a little bit of the flavor for it!

Happy Independence Day 2013!

For us in the United States it is, of course, Independence Day, a time to spend a minute or two thinking about our freedoms, our country, and the cost of obtaining & defending them. (Thanks for your service, Steve, and ditto for all of your comrades in arms!) Then we get down to the serious business of BBQ, parades, the beach, baseball, more BBQ, and fireworks!

20130704-143912.jpg

We’ll be getting our share of all of that at the Angels game tonight in Anaheim, thanks to a pair of tickets my daughters got for me for Father’s Day last month. Thanks, Kat & Michi!

I’m sure there will be fireworks pictures to show for it. The Angels always put on one of the better fireworks shows just for their normal “Big Bang Fridays” shows, and they really pour it on for the Fourth. I’ve got some new things to try as far as fireworks photography goes, so watch here next week to see how it goes.

In conclusion, my favorite quote of the day (from memory, so it might not be 100.000% correct) is from an English punk rocker dude who was talking on Sirius Radio this morning about a July 4th concert. He said, “We don’t celebrate on the Fourth, we mourn, since we won the silver medal in the War of Independence.” What an interesting mixed metaphor!

I Love Fireworks!

IMG_7362_small

I think the title says it all!

Aside from all of the other reasons we love to go to Angels games in Anaheim, we try to go on Friday nights because those are “Big Bang Fridays”, with a big fireworks show following the game. I love fireworks and my kids all follow in my footsteps in that regards, so if we want to go to an Angels game anyway, all things being equal, we’ll go on a Friday night.

On May 3rd we went to a game with a half-dozen of Ronnie’s friends and co-workers, some of whom had never been to a game before. As usual, I’ll set up a camera and just start shooting off pictures constantly, then see what comes out. (If this sounds a lot like how I take astrophotography, that’s because it is!)

Here are some nice photos from that game, for your enjoyment as the weekend ends and the new week starts tomorrow. (I think that if you click on the files you’ll get the full-sized photos.)

Smile – it’s fireworks!
