Odds & Sods For Sunday, June 16th

Item The First: The “Odds & Sods” articles aren’t really meant to only be a Sunday thing – they’re just sort of turning out that way for now. Just so you know – they can pop up out of nowhere any time, any day, and rock your world! (Especially on days when I’ve got a lot of little items to rant about instead of one big rant.)

Item The Second: Fifty years ago today, on June 16, 1963, the first woman went into space. Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to leave the planet, orbiting the Earth forty-eight times in three days, giving her more experience in space than the entire US astronaut corp combined at that point.

It was twenty years and two days later (so celebrate again on Tuesday!) when Sally Ride became the first American to go into space.

As of this moment there are two women in space, American Karen Nyberg on the ISS and Chinese astronaut Wang Yaping.

Of the 534 people who have gone to space, 57 have been women. So first of all, let’s get cracking on making that 534 number more like 534,000, and while we’re at it, let’s make that 57 number more like 267,000. Okey dokey?

Item The Third: We’re back home at last from the two-week long graduation tour to Virginia and Northern California. More thoughts and pictures and stories to follow (can’t shut me up!) but for now a bit of normal routine would be nice. Tomorrow we’ll get the dog back from “the spa”, for the next month or so I’ll be forced to pet the cat constantly since she’s not fond of “solitary” when we leave

Most importantly, in the morning we’ll have to hit the grocery store. In the weeks leading up to these trips we did a fantastic job of buying only groceries that we would need before we left to limit waste and what we would have to toss when we got back.

As a result, we now have one apple (which I picked up at the Admiral’s Club in LAX, carried to Virginia, carried all around Virginia, brought back to California from Virginia, took up to Davis, and have now brought BACK from Davis), some granola bars, a couple of Diet Cokes, and one serving of Cheerios.

It could get ugly here in the morning.

Item The Fourth: The birthday balloon is finally really, REALLY on it’s last legs, a full ninety days after my birthday. No need to alert either NASA or Goodyear. On Thursday, just before we left for Davis, it was just about neutrally buoyant with the original foot or so of yellow string attached.

Today it’s not quite hanging completely limp, but it’s not quite fully buoyant any more.

Still, that’s gotta be the best balloon I’ve ever gotten!

Odds & Sods For Sunday, June 2nd

iTEM tHE fIRST: mY cAPS lOCK KEY MAY BE MESSED UP — HOLD ON…

Item The Second: The birthday balloon continues to float,  seventy-six days after my birthday. If it’s not deflated in two weeks, we’ll try to license the technology to NASA. Or Goodyear.

Item The Third: The “Powerhouse” brush fire that I wrote about yesterday has exploded from 3,600 acres to over 25,000 acres. In related news, the Coastal Commission has moved to make it illegal for seagulls to shit in the ocean, or over land. All seagulls will now be required to wear diapers.

Item The Fourth: The DIY renovations started last week are proceeding well. As rumored, stripping wallpaper is a tedious, pain in the ass job, but Ronnie and I are working together a few hours at a time and making progress. The first wall we intend to paint is about 75% stripped and prepped. My plan for the next step has been vetoed – I wanted to paint it that same shade of putrid pink as the old wallpaper and hand-draw in the flowers with white crayons.

Item The Fifth: With the change in months, the Long Suffering Wife has again changed the dining room table setting, this month a “grads” theme (with some baseball thrown in). Quite appropriate since we have graduations to attend this week and next.

Wait, what’s that little birthday cake thing in there. Am I missing something?

Item The Sixth: On May 23rd I wrote about the danger of being in a Jaguar dealership all day with the new F-Series out and looking so sweet in the TV ads while my thirteen-year-old “MomDude-mobile” minivan has 165,000 miles on it. FYI, I did not buy a new F-Series (or any other Jaguar, or any other car).

Yet.

2013-05-26 Proof Of Life

Item The First. The “proof of life” photo shown above proves that the birthday balloon still lives! Good thing, too, since I hear there’s an upcoming helium shortage. Soon the remaining He in this balloon could be worth a small fortune. (A very, VERY small fortune.)

Item The Second. Step one of the remodel went unexpectedly well yesterday as the top layer of wallpaper pulled right off, leaving the room’s walls fuzzy and white. This was misleading, a treacherous and evil turn of events designed to give us false hopes so that our souls could be all the more crushed later, as anyone who has ever stripped wallpaper knows. The fuzzy and white layer was the second ply of the wallpaper and the wallpaper glue. We’ve experimented for a while now and it seems that this backing/glue layer was designed in Hell. The backing layer comes off pretty well with some chemical gunk that we got at the hardware store. That leaves the glue, which easily gets wet with simple water, but just turns into goo which smears and sticks and does just about everything in the world except come off the wall. Unless of course it has a chance to get stuck on you or your clothes, at which point it will come off the clothes and onto you, making you curse. Scraping off the glue is going to be a long, tedious, painstaking, annoying process.

Item The Third. So that the weekend isn’t all work and no play, Ronnie and I went to see “Star Trek – Into Darkness” and “Iron Man 3” today, both in 3-D. I enjoyed them both a great deal, especially “Star Trek”. No spoilers, but I will be glad to discuss likes and dislikes with folks by email, phone, text, or other channels of communication.

Item The Fourth. The sticky glue & wallpaper paste from Hell doesn’t have a strong scent, but the scent it has tends to seep into the skin of my hands a bit after a while, and I’m realizing tonight that the smell is triggering some old and not very pleasant memories from when I was a teenager and my family lived in and remodeled a very large house in Vermont. I did a lot of wallpaper stripping in that house, and the constant, faint smell of wallpaper paste might not be good for my mood. I think we’ll have to overwhelm it and bury it under other, more pleasant smells in order to trigger other, more pleasant memories. Baking cookies comes to mind. Does chocolate have a strong smell? How about BBQ? It is Memorial Day tomorrow, that will fit right in. How about margaritas? Wallpaper paste removal might be MUCH easier with the smell of fresh margaritas in the air… Just sayin’!

Item The Fifth. I did not buy a new Jaguar F-series the other day. (DUH! If I had the resources to buy a new top of the line Jaguar, I would pay someone else to remodel my house!)

Odds & Sods For Friday, May 17th

Item The First: When the gravitationally challenged cat is just falling asleep on your lap and you shove your phone into your jeans pocket right underneath her head causing her to come abruptly awake thinking that there’s something large crawling down your leg in your pants, she will extend all weapons, make an odd sound, levitate about three feet into the air (helped in part by using said weapons to dig into your soon-to-be bleeding flesh), and go tearing out of the room while looking back over her shoulder wondering WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT! Despite the potential pain and loss of blood, this is pretty funny.

Item The Second: For those not keeping score at home, my beloved MLB Angels continue to pretty much suck big-time this year. For the second year in a row the team has made huge payroll moves and signed big name free agents so that on paper we’re unstoppable and should easily win 100+ games. Instead we’re on a pace to easily lose 100+ games. This does not amuse me.

Item The Third: On the other hand, my beloved NHL Kings have found their stride in the playoffs and have now won six games in a row, beating St. Louis in the first round and now leading San Jose 2-0 in the second round. The Joyous Vuvuzela Of Victory continues to sing, and the neighbors haven’t yet called the police. This brings me joy.

Item The Fourth: I got a bit more good news today on the potential employment front. Without getting into details, I got word regarding one of the better opportunities so far. I’m told that I did well on this week’s panel interview (after first getting my resume looked at to begin with and then passing the written accounting skills test) and I’m now on the short list for the one position that’s open. Let’s hope for the best!

And now the cat beast has recovered her wits enough to remember that she hasn’t been fed yet tonight. My master summons me! I must fulfill my primary function, the main reason that I was endowed with opposable thumbs!
