Halloween 2018

As usual, if it’s not completely overcast, for Halloween I bring out the telescopes and let the trick or treaters take a peek at whatever might be up. The joker in the deck this year was the new location after we moved in May.

In the old house, where we were just a half block from an elementary school and two blocks from a high school, on a moderately well trafficked street, on flat ground, we would get hundreds of ghouls and goblins visiting. The new house is close to a mile from anything other than houses (coincidentally, those same schools since we didn’t move that far), on a street with very little traffic other than our neighbors, and at the top of a large, very steep hill. I didn’t think we would get hundreds of kids, but figured we might still get a fair number.

The clouds were thin for the most part, but it was not a “clear and a million” day. In addition, while earlier in the year we could look at Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars all in the same evening (and sometimes the moon as well) it’s now down to just Saturn and Mars.

The sunset was spectacular thanks to a small brush fire a few miles away, but that’s often not good for use of telescopes. Saturn will be right over the top of that telephone pole, at the edge (I hoped) of those clouds.

I don’t decorate as much for Halloween as I do for Christmas, but it was a good chance to put up a couple strings of lights and hang a skeleton or two. I even had a couple of pumpkins, thanks to a contest at our office building. I noticed as I was leaving that the two done by my co-workers were still on display in the lobby, while they were supposed to all be taken home by the end of the day. I either took care of that housekeeping item or I jacked my first pumpkins in about 45 years – po-TAY-toe, po-TAH-toe…

The sunset was spectacular and beautiful, but again, not so great for star gazing.

In the end, I could see Saturn reasonably well, and Mars, and a few other bright objects such as Alberio.

On the other hand, we got only six or seven trick-or-treaters, all in one group, and the only reason they came by was because I was in the yard, saw them get dropped off at a neighbor’s house, and hollered at them when they started to go down the hill away from us. (I might have threatened to eat all of the candy myself if they didn’t come over and take some off my hands.) They all took a look at Saturn through the telescope and made appropriate “ooh” sounds – but that was it for the evening.

Duly noted. I will adjust my candy buying expectations accordingly next year.

No Context For You – October 30th

If you’re facing a growing problem and the only options you can see are bad vs worse, scary vs terrifying, horrible vs catastrophic, painful vs excruciating, and you’re about 75% to 80% sure that you know what you’re going to have to do no matter how bad, scary, horrible, and painful it will be, but you keep urging yourself to be patient, to not make any rash decisions, to let your emotions cool off so you don’t act in the heat of passion, is that caution and maturity speaking in your head or fear and cowardice looking for any excuse at all to delay facing the situation and acting?

Or are they the same?

North Carolina Color

Not as much as I might have hoped for, but then again, I’m a Vermont expat.

There were a few trees doing their best to lead the charge, and I applaud them for the effort! But given the temperatures, the rains, and the changing climate in general, it looks like it will be early to mid November before peak color comes to central North Carolina.

Raleigh-Durham has been lovely, the wedding was amazing, and my murder was a ton of fun & very well deserved.

Time to get into the huge titanium tube once again to hurtle through Class A airspace at 500+ miles an hour

That Went Pretty Much As Expected

Yesterday I mentioned that I was going to be a pompous womanizer and general all around asshole. Looks like I did a great job of it!

Photo courtesy of Matt, who turned out to be the murderer.

I was feeling much better today and the wedding was wonderful!

Tomorrow, back into the big titanium tube for the flight back home.

Tonight I’m A Pompous Womanizer

Rumor has it I’ll shoot off my mouth at a party full of “business associates” (i.e., guys I’ve screwed out of money) and their wives (who I’ve simply screwed.)

I expect to get my sorry ass murdered.

Fortunately there will be a top notch detective there (who will also look a lot like me) to solve the case.

Let us pray that my improv-fu is strong today!

Meanwhile it’s a cold & icky day here sitting in the RDU lot on yet another run to pick up incoming in-laws:

Wish me luck with that whole “getting murdered for being a flaming asshole” thing!!

What Did The Hydrants Do?

I’m confused. Granted, there are differences from community to community, state to state, region to region about what certain things mean and now they’re indicated in local signage, but I really don’t understand here –

Just what did the hydrants do to deserve this sort of campaign of negativity?

Maybe it’s a voting thing – God knows there are enough election-related signs everywhere urging us to vote for this guy, against that guy, for this proposal, against this other stupid idea… Maybe there’s some local ordinance that’s being protested?

Just what did the hydrants do to deserve this?

Opportunities Exchanged

Sometimes the universe offers interesting opportunities. No doubt it’s all just coincidence as filtered through the forebrains of some slightly evolved apes who have a knack for pattern recognition and not some higher power trying to guide us. But still…

Last Thursday, John Scalzi was in Los Angeles on his latest book tour. (“The Consuming Fire” just came out last week and I finished it on the plane today – it’s very, VERY good, I enjoyed it tremendously, FYI.) I’ve gone to see him on his last four or five book tours and I highly recommend catching him if you ever can.

But last Thursday I couldn’t, or didn’t, make it out to see him on tour this time around. Too many priorities, a location that I would have loved to see but is harder to get to during rush hour, etc. Lots of reasons to not go and not enough excuses to make it happen. I was disappointed, but not devastated.

Then I noticed in his schedule that tonight he was going to be in Raleigh, NC, on the other side of the continent. By sheer coincidence, I’m in Raleigh, NC tonight, for a family wedding this weekend.

Coincidence? Or message from the gods??!!

Right. Coincidence. Still…

There’s one opportunity. While we were travelling all day to get here and had to be getting to our hotel and meeting family for dinner and so on when we did get into town, it might be possible to boogie out of the family events by 7:00 PM. Maybe. The signing tour site isn’t that far from our hotel, and by LA standards (where “across town” can be 120 miles and six hours at rush hour) it’s literally almost walking distance. (Granted, I’ve run marathons and enjoy walking, so two miles might mean something different to me than it does to others.)

That’s one opportunity.

On the other hand, at dinner I got to meet my new grand-niece-in-law (?!) for the first time. She’s a two-year-old sweetie and I need to get started early on being a bad influence for this next generation. I am, after all, the “funcle” in the family. (A certain amount of exhaustion and some challenges in getting a two-year-old dressed to go down to dinner led me to being labeled “Funcle Pants” at one point, but that’s a story for another day.

That’s another opportunity.

In the end I chose to spend time with my new future co-conspirator, which earned me both hugs and the pride and joy of hearing her learn the phrase “Funcle Paul.” I’ve seen Scalzi before, and will no doubt see him again many times in the future. But there’s only one chance to become Funcle Paul.

It’s Late

It’s late. It was a very long day. The night is going to be short and the alarm clock is going of at Zero Dark Thirty. Tomorrow’s going to be a very, very long day.

But when I went out to see why the LAPD helicopter was orbiting around (again – it’s back now for the third time tonight, so obviously something’s up) I found a few thin, high clouds and a most wonderful full-ish moon.

I’ll dream of the moon and other gorgeous things and hope and better days.

Golden

Something got me up early the other morning (given the choice, I would be up until 1AM or later every night and then not roll my butt out of bed before about 10:00) and I found much to my surprise that the later sunrise and my earlier rising and the shifting of the sun to the south as it rises in the fall all combined to make the kitchen and dining room of the “new” house the most amazing golden color.

Even this picture can’t begin to portray even half of the depth to the hues and the vibrancy of the color.

It was spectacular! Almost worth being out of bed before 10:00!
