Groundless Faith vs Depressing Reality

Having been raised Catholic, complete with six years of nuns in full “penguin” regalia teaching Catholic school, I’m familiar with the concept of faith.

Having rejected Catholicism and all other religions, I’m familiar with the realization that reality often sucks.

Tonight, having exposed myself to my daily dose of muck, mire, stupidity, and hatred in the news, I saw a comment by someone who was taking solace in her faith in God and her belief that under divine guidance it would all work out for the best. (For the moment we’ll ignore the discrepancy between that common view of the deity’s job description and the theological necessity for free will.)

For a moment I was almost jealous. In her piety and faith she wasn’t pissed off, depressed, furious, outraged, or anxious. God would take care of it, all’s well, let’s have dinner!

Then I was wondering how people with that kind of faith can manage to hold on to it when their it turns out God might have been asleep at the wheel that day. I know that many people lose their faith at that time (hey, welcome back to reality, have some wet wipes, there’s a lot of shit being flung about out here!) but many, such as my mother, hold onto it no matter what.

So which is better, to face reality with all of its flaws and warts and at times like this being pummeled heavily about the head and shoulders with the fact that we’re a long, long way from that mythical Paradise? Or to sail through it all with our faith as the rock solid keel keeping us on course, only to end up spinning and capsizing when that keel breaks away?

I’ll stick with reality for a lot of reasons, but here’s a key one that comes to mind.

If you forfeit the ownership of the world’s slimier aspects, you also forfeit any credit for its moments of bliss. You can believe that God’s invisible angels are all around you, or you can find yourself to be an angel of our own making. This can be in the smallest things, the way you treat people from total strangers to heads of state, to the biggest things possible, such as how you choose to react in a crisis.

You also get to take ownership of the world’s rainbows appearing in a ray of brilliant sunshine slipping through a hole in a black  thunderhead, the sound of the thunder rolling across the landscape, and the brilliant stars that come in the clear night skies that follow.

Sometimes there is an awful lot of shit to wade through, but if you’re going to have faith, think about a Mozart symphony, a 9-11 first responder, your child’s first cry, and the feel of your lover’s hand in yours as you walk through a quiet forest – then have faith there there really will be a pony underneath all of that shit.

Adulting Sucks

That was my first conclusion tonight, but I think there’s more.

“Adulting” can be defined (at least by me) as “acting like the adult in the room, being responsible, keeping calm and reasonable – when what you really want to start smacking a bunch of freakin’ idiots upside the head with a baseball bat because they’re freakin’ idiots and really, really deserve it.”

Most of you know what I’m talking about.

Remember those times you had to count slowly backwards from twenty-five in Klingon to avoid spending some time as a guest of the city, county, state, or federal penal system? Yeah, those times.

This week has had more than its fair share of those moments, and today in particular felt like just one after the other.

So – adulting sucks!

Which is fine. Having recognized the universal truth therein, we somehow manage to muddle through to a better state of mind, even while we wonder why those freakin’ idiots are hit by a bolt of lightning out of a clear, blue sky. (Not enough smiting being handed down by a wrathful god these days, if you ask me!)

But why does it feel so much worse all of a sudden?

It came to me while flipping past the news. (As a side note, I would kill for a pill that I could take so I wouldn’t have to listen or see any political news until mid-November.)

The reason we go around adulting when we really want to go around slapping some sense into stupid people is because of the penalties involved. At best, people think we’re a flaming asshole and we’re socially shunned. (Except perhaps by other flaming assholes, but who wants to be around them?) We don’t want to be kicked out of the herd just for breaking social norms.

Abandoning our adulting ways could have permanent effects on our ability to earn a living, to have friends, to have people who can stand to be in the same room with us. As bad as adulting sucks, the consequences imposed by society for not adulting are much worse.

Unless you’re a current candidate for the US Presidency and you’re a smug, crude, ignorant, delusional, racist, hate-filled, misogynistic, jingoistic, pea-brained, dim witted, congenital liar who wants us to believe he’s the next coming of Christ and Buckaroo Banzai all rolled up into one.

This disgusting waste of flesh not only wouldn’t know adulting if it bit him in the ass, but no matter what he does, no matter how clinically insane, he has no negative consequences. His fortunes just continue to rise and rise and rise.

So why should we have to adult when he doesn’t?

And there we find the next level of the problem. We adult because people who don’t disgust us. But now an army of minions, most of whom are as racist, bigoted, ignorant, and clueless as their leader is, are crawling out from under their rocks and making our world a mess. They had been hiding in the dark with the slime molds, where they belong, but now it’s fashionable for them to come out into the light of day where they we have to put up with them and even more of their bullshit.

While we’re busing adulting and trying to carry on because we’re sane and good, despite the rising tide of hatred and ignorance.

Not enough smiting. I’m telling you, someone’s asleep at the wheel.

No Context For You – July 24th

file jul 24, 22 42 42 small

The world is not black and white – infinite shades of grey, an infinite rainbow of color, and a spectrum that the eye can’t see but the mind’s tools can, screaming up through the ultraviolet toward X-rays and meandering down from infrared to radio waves.

Aside from having a wildly distorted and inaccurate view of the universe, those who see everything as either black or white are just missing so much, both literally and figuratively.

It would be sad if it weren’t currently so dangerous.

Reek (Attempt The Second)

Okay, THAT was weird! What I meant to say is:

…and not the “good” kind, like on Game of Thrones!

As I said on Facebook an hour ago:

A skunk in our back yard has expressed a powerful opinion about tonight’s RNC dumpster fire – repeatedly! Little striped dude, I’m sympathetic, I agree, but I can’t breathe! Please cool your jets!

It’s only gotten worse since then, as in giving-me-a-headache-making-me-want-to-puke-this-is-where-they-came-up-with-the-idea-of-tear-gas worse.

Bleah!!

I have no clue how all of that HTML from my Facebook feed got in there.

Is the moon full tonight? Close…

Maybe I should check the HTML of this post before I hit the blue button – and there’s all of that crap still in there, but not showing at all on the screen! Let’s hope that deleting it in the text/HTML version makes it go away.

Preview the post – still messed up. Try again. Preview again. Maybe it’s okay now?

First I can’t upload the stuff I want to, now something’s uploading crap that I do NOT want to and doing it invisibly.

Odd.

Kelp

Or Cthulu rising up out of the depths to throw its hat into the ring for the US Presidential election.

Which would no doubt be better than ANY of the current options.

Perspective

Well, first of all, there’s the literal meaning of the term in this picture.

Thrashing about wildly for something to share without turning into Captain Buzzkill!, this popped up. Thanks, Muse! I really like the foreshortening and blurring effects of the roof tiles.

In a more metaphorical meaning of the term, my second thought on seeing this picture was, “Is this little guy worried about ‘Brexit’ or the US elections or the plummeting stock markets or the complete failure of the US Congress or whether or not they should open ‘Rogue One’ with a crawl? No, of course not! Lucky bastard!”

Then I was thinking about how this guy can (and probably will) be snatched off this sunny, warm roof by a hungry hawk, taken up to the hawk’s nest and ripped to shreds and eaten by the baby hawks.

We’ll call this one even.

A Not-So-Friendly Warning

There’s a very large brush fire burning into its third day about 100 miles to the northwest of here. Dozens of houses have burned, whole towns are in the fire’s path, Highway 101 between Southern and Northern California has been shut down with flames on both sides of the road, and the “sundowner” winds have been gusting every night, fanning and spreading the inferno. As of tonight it was 20% contained, but there were concerns that it could get completely out of control again if the winds didn’t die down.

This morning, with the winds shifting from the north, LA was brown and smoky, over 100 miles away. I guess that’s not as surprising as it might have been a few weeks ago, when we saw that huge fire in Canada spreading smoke all the way to Atlanta.

As if that isn’t enough, it’s going to be a scorcher all over the US SouthWest this weekend. We’re expecting 94°F tomorrow, 104°F on Sunday, and 109°F on Monday. Up there in the fire zone, aside from, you know, the radiant heat of thousands and thousands of acres burning in your face, it’s only supposed to be 97°F.

On the other hand, in places like Phoenix, Arizona, it’s supposed to be 119°F on Sunday, and I notice that the forecast there is for the highs to be 112°F or above for the next nine days, as far as the current forecast goes out. There are whole swatches of this part of the world that are expecting the highest temperatures EVER RECORDED at those recording sites. Not the highest temperature on that day in history – the highest temperatures ***EVER*** recorded at those spots.

Then I saw the news that the very last recording station on Earth that was still seeing CO2 levels under 400 parts per million has finally reached that symbolic level. It’s in Antarctica, about as far away from anything human as they can put it. The last time the CO2 levels hit this height was over four million years ago. From this point onward we almost certainly will never see any spot on Earth recording less than that in our lifetimes. Or our children’s lifetimes, or their children, or their children…

All of that made me think that, in an effort to be totally transparent and up front with everyone, I should let y’all know:

If you ever, EVER come to my site, my timeline, or my face wanting to tell me that CO2 isn’t causing climate change (100% bullshit), that human activities aren’t driving that CO2 increase and climate change (unbelievable 100% bullshit), that scientists haven’t really proven that there’s climate change (you’ve got to be freakin’ kidding me 100% bullshit), that it’s “just a theory” (bullshit 100% ignorant of any clue what the scientific method is or what the word “theory” means), or anything along those lines, I will as politely as I can ask you to piss off and never darken my door again.

If you’re stupid enough to ignore that request (and I’m betting you are if you’re spewing any of the aforementioned bullshit) then I will do everything I can to show the world what a moronic, ignorant, clueless, illiterate, uneducated, imbecilic, cretinous, witless buffoon you are. I don’t for a second think that any of the mountain of evidence and facts that I’m going to shower on you will change your mind, but the rest of us will have fun laughing at you and pointing.

Then I will block your ass and take whatever measures are necessary to never hear from you again. Life’s too short to spend it putting up with the intentionally ignorant.

For those who think this is a policy which stifles a free exchange of ideas – get a clue. Look up “false equivalency” for starters. Put simply, if I say 5+5=10 but you think that 2+8=10 and someone else says 15-5=10, we can discuss how each of us got to ten. On the other hand, if I say 5+5=10 but you say 5+5=37.89927837128 because there’s a conspiracy founded by some secret society and the aliens are really running the whole thing, then we have nothing to talk about and it’s a waste of breath for me to do so.

I just wanted y’all to know!

Twitter Ten Thousand

Last August I reached a milestone on my Twitter account, posting my 5,000th tweet. Twitter says that I joined some time in February 2009, so it took six years and seven months to post 5,000 tweets.

Today, less than nine months later, I posted my 10,000th. Granted, many of them are re-tweets, particularly of photos of the Earth taken by astronauts on ISS. Plus other space stuff. And airplane stuff. And science stuff. Still, that’s a lot of tweets.

In August I thought about noting the 5,000th tweet with something at least thoughtful instead of just another smartass remark (is “smartass” one word or two?) or a retweet. At the time I was still looking for a job, despite having not acknowledged that explicitly in my work here, so I referred vaguely to “the 400 lb elephant” and a second “meeting.” Because for various reasons I didn’t want to use terms like “unemployment” or “interview,” I was being obtuse.

With the 10,000th Tweet here, I again was looking for something less “fluffy” to post. It occurred to me that the 5,000th tweet was, in retrospect, about the biggest concern I had in life at the time. So what has me on edge today?

Oh, yeah, THAT. But rather than go off on a rant regarding one particular person or another, I wanted to address the more general problem. (I now notice that I had the dates off by a few weeks, but that doesn’t change the point I’m trying to make.)

At this rate, I should be hitting 15,000 tweets about mid-January. Let’s say, about January 20th. Which, the way things are lining up right now, will be a rather historic date in American history.

Let’s hope that by February 1, 2017 we’re not asking ourselves, “What in the hell were we possibly thinking?”

Weltanschauung No Mas!

“The practice of cow tipping is generally considered an urban legend…”

Well, there goes my weltanschauung! What other bucket list items of my (not) misspent youth are also urban legends?

Streaking?” No, actually that was a well documented thing in the early 1970s. We actually had someone streak a high school basketball game in my Vermont home town. While he was wearing a ski mask or something to make himself less instantly recognizable, most of us knew who it was. It was not the huge mass hysteria that the oh-so-very-NOT-liberal-mainstream-media of the day made it seem, but it was more commonplace on college campuses (“Thank you, Captain Obvious!”) and in places like Southern California.

The Chicken Gun?” I can’t say if it’s really true or not, but I first heard of it from a close, trusted friend (we still miss you, Gary!) who happened to be working at a naval base in California where they actually did the testing. I’m not saying that he was pulling my leg, telling a tall tale, or even just passing on a story he had heard, but I’m willing to give this one a solid “maybe.”

Most of the urban legends out there are either so ridiculous (the babysitter and the phone call that’s coming from inside the house!), so bizarre (Mr. Rodgers was an ex-Navy SEAL sniper with dozens of kills), or so simply freakin’ STUPID (on {insert date here} Mars will look as big as the full moon!) that they don’t get more than about two seconds’ thought from me. And I always check Snopes first. (If we could just get a built-in “Snopes/bullshit filter” for FaceBook…)

That’s one of the problems with the current Presidential campaign. A good number of things that are actually being said are so bizarre that you would at first just figure it was some cockamamie satire or joke spreading around the internet. But when you see the quote or the story in the New York Times, and Reuters, and on CNN, and every other legitimate news outlet, it must be true. You’ll even see the video.

“Huh, he really DID say that! Damn! And he’s still in the Presidential race!! I wonder what Howard Dean thinks about that?”

With any little snippet being bizarre enough to be true, and every good urban legend containing the seed of truth, we’re now seeing a flood of full blown satire articles and urban legends being passed around social media, all taken as fact. Today’s favorite of mine comes from Ted Cruz’s time as attorney general of Texas, when he defended a law banning sex toys. The short version is that he said there was no Constitutional right to masturbate.

But now I’ve seen a couple of stories that blow that one little bit into a whole diatribe, where the scourge of American masturbation that’s sweeping the continent is a bigger threat than ISIS.

Um…no.

Wouldn’t our world be a better place if more people went out tipping cows and spent less time idolizing bizarro whack jobs as “leaders?”
