Tech “Support”

Back home for two days before going off on the second phase of the Great 2013 Graduation Tour, one of the little life details that needed to get taken care of was a smog check. No worries.

While there, my iPad starts popping up requests to link to the local cable company’s Wi-Fi Hot Spot. These spots are all over, they’re advertising heavily, we get something about it all the time by e-mail and in our bill. But I’ve never been able to sign in.

So again I read the instructions, put in the account information for my cable account just like it says, and get an error message that says that I need to have internet access on my cable bill in order to be eligible to use the Wi-Fi Hot Spots. Since we have a high-speed T1 account for our home Internet access through that self-same cable company, why is this a problem?

Almost 50 minutes later while talking to my third agent at tech and sales support, I’m ready to scream. What a bunch of freakin’ idiots!

When I get home I double check the cable company’s web site, and it’s quite clear about their account ID username and password being used for online account access (which I have), using the iPad and iPhone apps to control the home DVRs (which I have), using the iPad and iPhone apps to watch on demand stuff like HBO (which I have) and sports (which I have), and access to the Wi-Fi Hot Spots (which I’m trying to get). Figuring maybe it’s a different account ID username and password that they’re using the same terminology for, I try to sign up again specifically for a username and password for the Wi-Fi Hot Spots. The system says that I already have one, and confirms that it’s the one that I’ve been trying all along.

Now I try to get in touch with tech and sales support using their Live Chat function. An hour later, I’m again ready to scream. WHAT A BUNCH OF FREAKIN’ IDIOTS!

The best part was when we had gone over the problem over and over and over and they finally decide that the solution is to set up a Road Runner email account for me to use as an access ID. Tech support ignores the fact that this was already my Plan B, and my notes show that I set up that Road Runner account last August (trying to solve this exact same problem) and it doesn’t work either, it just gives me a different set of error messages.

I repeatedly go to the web page they specify in order to sign up for a new account – I repeatedly get an error message saying that the page can’t be shown due to a “Registration Error” and I should call the cable company to fix it. I repeatedly get told that’s impossible and I should try it again, the assumption on their part being that I’m too stupid to go to this web page. When I’m simply clicking on the link that they’re sending to me – error message. When I type it in myself – error message. When I open a new browser or a new tab – error message.

At one point the guy starts spelling it out to me, “h – t – t – p – s – colon – backslash – backslash…” “Dude, really, I know how to type in a secure http address!” ERROR MESSAGE!

The next try they simply start typing the step-by-step instructions faster than I can tell them that it’s STILL not working and I’m STILL getting the exact same error message. But now they’re assuming that I’m done and it’s been successful so they tell me I should have a new email address such as “abc@rr.com”. When I AGAIN explain that I got the exact same “Registration Error” page as before and there’s no “abc@rr.com” address to work with, I get a lecture about how the “abc” part isn’t literally true, that’s just an example…

Really? Gee, in over forty years of programming, tech support, hardware & software installation, software training, hardware maintenance, system administration in CP/M, Unix, Linux, Windows, Apple OS, I’ve never, ever figured out that I really shouldn’t use “abc” as my email address in that process.

F – R – E – A – K – I – N’  I – D – I – O – T – S ! ! ! !

When it got to the point where the only option they had to suggest was that I reboot my computer, reboot my cable modem, shut down my home network and disconnect the router and wireless, then start powering it back on with just one computer attached to the cable modem and then try again to reach that address at “h – t – t – p – s – colon – backslash – backslash…”

I just closed the chat window at that point. That’s two hours of my life I’ll never get back. They had the nerve to then send me a customer satisfaction survey – on a scale of one to ten, I gave them straight ones, and that was only because I couldn’t give them zeroes.

And they wonder why I never got a Road Runner account to begin with!

Travel Day!!

Phase One of the Great Graduation Tour of 2013 is coming to a close. (Congratulations, Brie!!) We’re at ORF nice and early, chilling before the flight to DFW (we hope) and the connection to LAX (we hope).

The “hope” part comes from the current weather here in coastal Virginia:

20130610-162935.jpg
Those are some big thunderheads!

I enjoy non-boring weather (one of many reasons to look forward eagerly to the day when we leave Los Angeles for good) and we’ve had plenty of that today with a mix of sunshine, showers, lightning, thunder, and frog-drowner downpours. Fun and non-boring, but sometimes not so good for keeping the planes running on time.

I also now realize that I could have done a better job in planning this trip. My bad — not up to my usual standards.

First of all, we could have gone down to Raleigh and seen Brad Paisley if we really wanted to. While we were there we could have gone to my high school friend’s house and emailed her a picture of us standing on her front porch looking forlorn. (She invited us to come and visit the last time we were in Virginia and we knew she was out of town this weekend. Sorry, Maria! I try to never pass up a good gag!)

Secondly, we’re not on a tight schedule to get home and our beloved Angels are in Baltimore starting tonight to play the Orioles. We’ve seen the Angels play the Red Sox in Boston, the White Sox in Chicago, and the Mariners in Seattle, so if I had known we would have stayed the extra day and driven up to Baltimore to see them. (On the other hand, looking at the downpour outside at the moment, maybe not…)

Thirdly, we normally take the 6AM flight out of ORF, and while getting up at 3AM to get that flight isn’t my idea of a good time, it does get us back into LAX around noon with most of the day still ahead of us. Somehow I got us on the 6PM flight, which gets us back in after midnight. It was great to sleep in this morning, we did get to say goodbye to The Long Suffering Niece #3 and The Long Suffering Sister-In-Law, we got a leisurely lunch, and we got to see exciting weather. But it feels like we’re a bit “off” on this schedule.

Maybe I’m feeling discombobulated because we’re not suffering enough. Maybe it’s a “recovering Catholic” thing.

Speaking of being discombobulated, check out the conversation this morning on Amanda Palmer’s Twitter feed. She had a picture and many comments about the area in the Milwaukee airport where you can get redressed and reorganized after going through the TSA line. It’s clearly labeled as a “Recombobulation Area” – that’s very, very clever!

Finally, here at the gate in ORF they’re playing Glen Miller and Tommy Dorsey and Count Basie and other 40’s music — no Kenny G to be found. It’s all good!!

Nada Cicadas

We had one “open” day in our “vacation” schedule and rather than sit on a beach or sit anywhere, I had it in mind to go looking for cicadas.

Cicadas are these really big, ugly, LOUD bugs that hatch every thirteen or seventeen years. They don’t bite, don’t sting, don’t do much of anything except hatch, grow, freak folks out, make a mess, drop their eggs into the soil for the next long cycle, and die. They’re hatching now and I wanted to find some.

The maps and reports I had seen in the last week said there were some sightings up around Williamsburg, with many more up near DC in Fredricksburg, and another cluster inland near Richmond. Up in New Jersey there are LOTS of reports of big outbreaks of cicadas, but that’s an eight-hour drive or more, each way.

I was going out driving today with the Long Suffering Wife and her Long Suffering Sister and the Long Suffering Niece In Training #2, so driving for hours to maybe see bugs wasn’t necessarily in the cards. We agreed to go up to Williamsburg and see what we could see.

Which was nothing. We had a very pleasant drive and made an appearance at the Colonial Williamsburg information center. The guy there acted like I was pulling his leg asking about cicadas, but some very nice folks in line behind me knew was I was talking about and suggested going north of DC. (Not going to happen.)

We tried over at Jamestown and a very nice security guard told us to keep looking. He knew what I was talking about, but hadn’t seen or heard of any in the ares. (The drive from Williamsburg to Jamestown is lovely, stopped and saw some really cool hawks soaring over the river and marshes there.)

I knew they were around – we had heard them, but not seen any, when I was out on a nature hike on Saturday. But with defeat at both Williamsburg and Jamestown, it was time for “Plan B”. There’s a wonderful winery in Williamsburg, along with William & Mary College, so we had a great lunch, some wine tasting, found a specialty chocolate store, and declared victory.

Good luck to all of the cicadas out there! Wish we could have said hello. Maybe I’ll be back to say hello to your kids in 2030.

Busy Vacation

We’re not big on those vacations where you go find a beach and just lay there & sip adult beverages for a week with no schedule other than sleep when you want and then get up when you want and then do what you want until it’s time to go back to sleep (when you want).

So it’s been a busy, busy couple of days. Here’s a couple of quick photos off of my iPhone with more pictures & stories to follow when we get back and catch our breath…

Oh, and it’s nearly midnight and we’re off again by 9:00 tomorrow morning yet I MUST stay up because my beloved Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings are in a must-win-or-go-home game, now getting ready to start double overtime. How can a true fan think of sleep at a time like this, even if I can’t blow the Joyous Vuvuzela of Victory when we win?

I Know Who To Blame!

It’s really late and we were up really early this morning for niece graduation stuff and we were up really late last night with niece graduation stuff and I didn’t get much sleep last night due to a noisy family reunion group that’s on the floor of our hotel and they’re already being really loud again tonight and we had a very full and busy day today and a very full and busy day yesterday and I’m tired and cranky and I have a headache.

I blame Kenny G.

Before and after the niece graduation stuff last night and again before and after the niece graduation stuff this morning they were playing Kenny G music in the auditorium. Isn’t that stuff toxic?

If you work in a nuclear power plant you have to wear a dosimeter to keep track of your exposure to radiation.

If you’re going to sit in that high school auditorium for graduation awards ceremonies, shouldn’t there be something similar to measure your exposure to Kenny G?

Hey, science dudes! Get to work on that!!

If those revelers down the hallway stay noisy, can I start playing Kenny G to annoy them? Or at least as white noise?

G’night…

Everyone Talks About The Weather

20130606-130853.jpg

As oddly as folks in Los Angeles handle any kind of weather other than “late night & early morning low clouds clearing by noon high in the 70’s with 80’s in the inland valleys” (the LA weather critters say that as one syllable), I’m finding it interesting to see what’s going on in coastal Virginia at the moment.

We’re traveling and doing family graduation stuff and thus a little bit out of touch with a lot of the news (someone named Red got married?) but for the third time today we’ve come into some place or the other and found The Weather Channel on the TV in the lobby. That being something you don’t see in LA (they’re more into soaps, Oprah, and game shows for their lobby television) it made me take notice.

Seems there’s a tropical storm pounding Florida right now and headed into North Carolina and Virginia tomorrow. Cool!! We can definitely see the change in the weather as it’s getting cooler, windier, and cloudier by the hour.

A couple of inches of rain, some scattered thunder storms, winds up to 40 knots, with the remote possibility of a tornado – I would figure that wasn’t that unusual in these parts. I didn’t expect The Weather Channel’s storm updates to be the channel de jour around town unless it was a hurricane incoming, but I would be wrong!

STORM WATCH!! At least here we’ll get more than a tenth of an inch of drizzle to justify all of the hoopla.

See The ISS This Week!

Even though I’m out on the road doing in-law visit stuff this week, I wanted to remind almost everyone in North America (and it’s fast & easy for those of you elsewhere on the planet also) to check for a series of bright International Space Station (ISS) passes overhead this week.

Flyby Screen Image

This is what the “Flyby” app on my iPhone looks like tonight, with bright passes before dawn tomorrow morning, after sunset tomorrow evening, and again on Friday. Here in the mid-Atlantic states on the US eastern seaboard, bright passes continue though at least Sunday.

On the west coast, I received a similar set of notices for this week, and my daughter in Northern California reported an extremely bright pass last evening nearly right across the zenith.

NASA has an excellent summary of how to see the ISS as it goes over your location.

The “Flyby” app is available for $2.99 (not my app, I’m not making any money here, I just use it all the time and I’m recommending it to you) for either the iPhone and for Android. On the web, see this NASA site for ISS tracking and sighting predictions, or here to get text messages from NASA when the ISS is visible from your location.

Enjoy! Seeing the ISS is always spectacular, and this week’s sighting opportunities should be excellent!e

The Weird Get Going

20130604-061518.jpg

Boring Brain Tired

It’s been a very busy, productive day today, but my brain is tired, a bit down, and not very creative. And when the going gets weird, the weird get going, so I will – tomorrow.

Now, it’s time to write something ’cause that’s why this blog exists. To get some writing done, even when my brain doesn’t want to. ESPECIALLY when my brain doesn’t want to. So here, have a picture of…of…of…wait, let me see what I have available quickly on this computer…of a…Kodiak 100!!

IMG_5756_Kodiak_100

Who doesn’t love airplane pictures? Sure, that’s better!

Today, among other busy, productive things that I’ve done, I’ve been following the reactions of folks watching HBO’s “Game Of Thrones” without benefit of having read the books in advance.

No spoilers here (we’re behind in watching them using “On Demand” and Ronnie hasn’t read the books, so I don’t want to ruin the “fun”) but it’s been interesting to watch. Probably next week too, at least a bit.

It will leave people waiting anxiously for Season Four.

Gotta get up early tomorrow. One of my favorite things.

That kid in Virginia Beach had better be right about the Kings game being on TV in the bar there tomorrow night, or I will NOT be happy.

Odds & Sods For Sunday, June 2nd

iTEM tHE fIRST: mY cAPS lOCK KEY MAY BE MESSED UP — HOLD ON…

Item The Second: The birthday balloon continues to float,  seventy-six days after my birthday. If it’s not deflated in two weeks, we’ll try to license the technology to NASA. Or Goodyear.

2013-06-02 photo (3)

Item The Third: The “Powerhouse” brush fire that I wrote about yesterday has exploded from 3,600 acres to over 25,000 acres. In related news, the Coastal Commission has moved to make it illegal for seagulls to shit in the ocean, or over land. All seagulls will now be required to wear diapers.

Item The Fourth: The DIY renovations started last week are proceeding well. As rumored, stripping wallpaper is a tedious, pain in the ass job, but Ronnie and I are working together a few hours at a time and making progress. The first wall we intend to paint is about 75% stripped and prepped. My plan for the next step has been vetoed – I wanted to paint it that same shade of putrid pink as the old wallpaper and hand-draw in the flowers with white crayons.

2013-06-02 photo (1)

Item The Fifth: With the change in months, the Long Suffering Wife has again changed the dining room table setting, this month a “grads” theme (with some baseball thrown in). Quite appropriate since we have graduations to attend this week and next.

2013-06-02 photo (2)

Wait, what’s that little birthday cake thing in there. Am I missing something?

Item The Sixth: On May 23rd I wrote about the danger of being in a Jaguar dealership all day with the new F-Series out and looking so sweet in the TV ads while my thirteen-year-old “MomDude-mobile” minivan has 165,000 miles on it. FYI, I did not buy a new F-Series (or any other Jaguar, or any other car).

Yet.
