Reek (Attempt The Second)

Okay, THAT was weird! What I meant to say is:

…and not the “good” kind, like on Game of Thrones!

As I said on Facebook an hour ago:

A skunk in our back yard has expressed a powerful opinion about tonight’s RNC dumpster fire – repeatedly! Little striped dude, I’m sympathetic, I agree, but I can’t breathe! Please cool your jets!

It’s only gotten worse since then, as in giving-me-a-headache-making-me-want-to-puke-this-is-where-they-came-up-with-the-idea-of-tear-gas worse.

Bleah!!

I have no clue how all of that HTML from my Facebook feed got in there.

Is the moon full tonight? Close…

Maybe I should check the HTML of this post before I hit the blue button – and there’s all of that crap still in there, but not showing at all on the screen! Let’s hope that deleting it in the text/HTML version makes it go away.

Preview the post – still messed up. Try again. Preview again. Maybe it’s okay now?

First I can’t upload the stuff I want to, now something’s uploading crap that I do NOT want to and doing it invisibly.

Odd.

Trailcam – July 17th

No, I’m not going to fill my website with critter pictures every day. But it was one of those days and thinking tonight is contraindicated.

A $100 plumbing problem turned into an $800 plumbing problem and then looked like it was going to be a $6,000 plumbing problem but instead turned into a $14,000 plumbing problem, which we’re going to have to do because the alternative is almost certainly a $50,000 plumbing problem.

I just LOVE owning a house!

A 21:00 arrival – fashionably late.

Mom leads the way out of the tree.

I have no idea what she’s looking at up there. Howling at the moon? That’s about where it would be at that time.

About a two to three hour cycle with them coming and going.

This camera does have video capability which I’ll have to try out. I wonder if they go get food and bring it back here to eat it, or what the behavior is that drives this cycle.

Follow Mama!

Mama’s a good sized critter, bigger than a cat (except for possibly a Maine Coon), about the size of a mid-sized dog, probably 15 pounds or so.

03:12 is an earlier night to go to ground than last night. I wonder if anything’s up.

I don’t recall any sign or prediction of fog – it’s pretty much dry as a bone here. (Epic five-year drought, blah blah blah.) Instead I suspect this is a glare from Mama being just a few inches in front of the camera, either in passing or performing an investigation.

This is going to be fun! I love my new toy!

For reference, the flat roof here is the one over my computer room / office. My desk is right about directly under where the camera is. The hidey hole where the raccoons often live is where that little gap is at the left edge of where the flat roof and the garage roof intersect. Just beyond the garage, to the left, is that honkin’ big date palm that you see in about 99% of the pictures taken from the front yard.

Coming back here after wherever they spent the night before. Less than an hour after sunset and you can see that the twilight sky is still much lighter than it is in later pictures.

It’s been obvious for a while that the hidey hole under the eaves of our garage is not their only “nest.” It obviously is their daytime home quite often – you can hear them moving around off and on all day long.

Mom sees the camera, attached to the ladder at the edge of the roof. “W! T! F!”

It’s still there. Let’s see if it will attack.

Now it’s clear that the family is indeed a female with three smaller kits.

I did wonder what they kept doing with this pipe. From inside, I can often hear them banging it, moving it, sliding it around a bit. It’s not fastened down, I just figured they were tripping over it or just stepping on it.

Wrong!

The pipe is a drain for the condensation coming from the heat pump just out of sight on the right. This little guy’s holding on to it and they’re quite often seen over there by the end.

Which all of a sudden makes perfect sense. Yet another reason they think we’re the Raccoon Ritz. The pipe gives them a safe and convenient source of drinking water!

This picture also explained something. At times we just get a tremendous ruckus coming from up there, clearly heard from several rooms away. It sounds like a burglar is breaking in. I’ve thought it might be a half dozen or more adults fighting, having an orgy, or both.

Nope, it’s the kits wrestling around and playing, like immature mammals around the planet have been doing for the past several hundred thousand years. When they hit the two skylights (just out of sight in the far right corner) and scamper back and forth across them, it’s like them frolicking on a drum.

They seem to come and go, back about every two hours or so. Feeding I presume, looking for someone with an open trash can or a fruit tree that makes easy pickings.

Sunrise was at 05:50 – this was the last time I saw them as they headed into the hidey hole for the day.

I find it interesting that they come out less than an hour after sunset but go to ground for the day almost two hours before sunrise. My guess is that it’s easy to know when the sun has gone down and it’s dark enough for them to feel comfortable, while their sense of when sunrise is coming might not be as accurate.

But I could be completely full of it. (Full disclosure – the odds are excellent that I am.)

One More Picture

Still having issues with WordPress, still haven’t heard back from tech support. So far I can post text without problem on all platforms, and I can post media (pictures, video, Twitter, etc) from my phone. I can not post any media from the “classic” web interface, and from the “new & improved” web interface I’m getting media to post about one time in ten.

Just saying, if all of a sudden you don’t see anything posted here for a bunch of days, it either means I picked off by a runaway crosstown bus or that I’ve lost all ability to post. It could happen.

In the meantime, here’s a “test” image picked at random, to go along with the previous 3,751 posted in the last forty months or so.

Now THAT's A Good BBQ! - DSCN4127

This is how we know it was a good barbecue around here! (That’s the back of my right hand, with much of the hair curled & burnt off from a flare up – no harm, no foul. It grows back.)

No Paparazzi!

Don’t you just hate it when you’re just trying to go out with the wife and kids for a little dinner, to stretch your legs, to get out of the house for a bit, when those assholes with cameras show up and flash! Flash! Flash! FLASH FLASH FLASH!! Over here! No, look this way! FLASH FLASH FLASH!

Hey, they started it – it sounded like they were training for the Olympic elephant dancing team up there on the roof tonight!

IMG_3043_small

Well, there’s their “superhighway” on to and off of the roof – that tree makes it stupid easy to get up there.

IMG_3051_edited

“Come here, guys! Look at what’s up here. It’s that freakin’ idiot from downstairs with that big flash of his!”

(I would note that while this picture proves that there are at least four – I’m guessing a mating pair and at least two kits – in the flashing and flashlight glow I swear I saw a fifth, and possibly a sixth.)

IMG_3052_edited

“Stop that! It is so annoying! You are really getting on my nerves!”

“Honey, is he still out there?”

“Honey, he’s frightening the kids! He probably thinks you’re rabid, go scare him off!”

“Dear, what if he’s rabid? He’s the one standing on top of that really rickety and unstable ladder, perched on the edge of the Jacuzzi, on that  step that says ‘Do not stand on this step or higher,’ using both hands with the camera and flashlight. Doesn’t that prove he’s barking mad?”

IMG_3059_edited

“So you don’t have to actually throw yourself off the roof into his face. Just run over there like you’re going to. He’ll go right off onto the concrete and bounce into the bottom of the empty Jacuzzi, breaking every bone in his body!”

IMG_3065_edited

“Not tonight, dear, I’m working on controlling my aggressive tendencies this week.”

IMG_3066_edited

“Let’s just go inside, he’ll cramp up trying to balance on that ladder, then he’ll go inside and put the pictures on his website. We can bring the elephants back out and get some more training in while he types.”

As for the quality and focus of these pictures, they’ll improve if/when I get a taller and much more stable ladder. Or when I get a flight suit when built in air bags that can keep me from breaking every bone in my body when I hit the bottom of the empty Jacuzzi.

The Sound You Hear

Well, THAT sound is the fireworks being shot off up on the hill by knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, pinhead excuses for human beings who apparently think the “EXTREME FIRE DANGER” warnings (not to mention the dozen-plus active brush fires in SoCal) are for everyone else. I know that the LAPD is probably stretched thin, but couldn’t we spare one officer to make sure these clowns end up sitting in a cell someplace until at least the 5th?

But the OTHER sound you hear is the wailing of the war drivers who can no longer mooch off of our wi-fi. (Note for the record – I have absolutely NO reason to believe that any of our neighbors are actually are doing this. They all are lovely people.)

We’ve been having more and more serious and more frequent issues with our internet connection for the last two weeks or so. Today I was able to take care of the problem. Our cable modem was years and years old and finally failing. It was relatively simple to swap it for a newer one at the cable company office. They also said that our connection speeds would increase significantly. (That would be a sweet byproduct of this upgrade!)

It turns out that our new modem has built-in, dual channel wi-fi. We had been using a separate wi-fi router before, but it hasn’t had any security on it for a while. It used to – I set it up when I first installed it. But some time in the last year or so it got reset and I got lazy and never put the security back in place.

The good news is that our cable company is now giving out modems with the security protocols enabled by default. To log in, there’s a thirteen-digit, random, alphanumeric password printed on a label on the bottom of the unit.

The bad news is that they don’t bother to tell you this or give you anything that might even vaguely resemble an instruction sheet or manual. God knows how the average lay person figures out how to log in, let alone change the security settings on the equipment. But when it comes to tech, I’m not the average lay person.

After googling for the model’s user’s manual, I figured out how to log in (without calling customer service!) and found the built-in utility for updating modem settings to be better than average and quite easy to use. I first figured out how to change the SSIDs to “WeLoveTheStarsTooFondly” and “ToBeFearfulOfTheNight.” (There are two because of the dual-speed access.) I changed the passwords, then changed the password and username to log onto the modem.

As a side note, does anyone want to guess how many of these modems in the greater LA area have the username still set at “admin” and the password still set at “password”? I’m thinking that greater than 50% is a sucker bet, and I wouldn’t necessarily bet against it being greater than 75%.

But here at Castle Willett we’re tight now. A good, secure set of passwords, solid security protocols activated, and the hardware firewall set to kill, not stun.

If we find our yard tee-pee’d tomorrow morning I suspect it will be from some frustrated war drivers.

The thought makes me smile.

Karma’s A Comedian

Wasn’t that a Culture Club song?

Let’s just say that in light of my long, long period of unemployment, it was highly amusing when The Long Suffering Wife stumbled across a job listing today that I had a reasonably close connection to. Scenarios opened up in everyone’s head that I won’t be touching with the proverbial ten-foot pole.

The response when I shared the “news” was also gratifying, and QUITE different from any responses I ever got in my previous career. That would also be a most excellent reason for not checking the color of the ground cover on the alternate surface of the barrier.

The world’s going to hell in a handbasket, folks. You’ve got to find your humor where you can.

Now if Karma could just do something about the mental midgets who are shooting off fireworks. Did we not just have a large brush fire just two miles from here three weeks ago? And that was before we had a week of triple-digit temperatures, with no end in sight. Just how stupid can people get?

Oddly Disconcerting

We don’t have the most common surname in the world. So it’s always with a bit of a start that I see something like this on the television:

IMG_8233 small

I first heard of Danny Willett when I saw him playing in the British Open about two years ago. He’s English, and since I can trace my family tree back to 1664 when my  great(times-many)grandfather came to North America with the English fleet that “liberated” New Amsterdam from the Dutch and re-named it New York, I expect it likely that we’re VERY distantly related.

I suspect I’m probably more closely related to a random stranger from Virginia, Kentucky, or South Dakota than I am to the golfer.

When Danny Willett won the Masters tournament earlier this year, it of course caught my attention. Today he wasn’t doing too well in the US Open (he finished at +9 and tied for 37th place) but I happened to see some of his coverage.

It’s still odd, and a bit disconcerting for some reason. I guess if my name was Smith or Kennedy or Bush I would have gotten used to it at an early age. But it’s not.

At least I’m not seeing someone with the same last name displayed on a mug shot on national television. That couldn’t be a good thing.

There Goes The Skunk Again!

If you’ve been here at all for any time, you know we have critters. We may be in the be-you-ti-full San Fernando Valley but it’s a regular Weird Kingdom out there.

I can put up with the ceiling dripping blood. I can put up with the raccoons under the eaves. I love having the bats and all of the birds. The bunnies are cute, even if they do tear up the yard.

But the skunks?

The meander around a bit, so we might go weeks without smelling one, but when they wander back into our immediate neighborhood all of a sudden something is setting them off at least every other night. I suspect that “something” is probably a dog and I wouldn’t be surprised if the dog was on a leash with a very surprised neighbor on the other end.

Sometimes Nature stinks! Sometimes it stinks and makes your eyes water and makes you nauseous even a block or two away.
