Stolen Joy

My son, who was in Chicago when my beloved Cubbies won the World Series, sent copies of the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times from the morning after they had won, as well as a “W” flag and a World Series Cubbies hat.

Do I have a great son, or what?

Looking at them tonight, it occurs to me that it’s yet another reason to absolutely despise what’s happening politically in this country.

As much joy as I had with my beloved Cubbies winning, that joy has been tainted, tarnished, and diminished by the fact that I’m so full of angst and anger.

I just hope we have an opening day next spring so that the Cubbies can get their rings and have that celebration. I really, really hope that the existential crisis that we’re in has passed, or at least let up, to the point where we can enjoy that celebration and rite of spring.

I don’t know that I would bet on it right now. I’ll be so, so happy next April if I can look back on this and laugh at how wrong I was.

I hope. Still.

Shadows

When I got into the office this morning, the east side of the building had this view:

I believe he was playing air guitar here, some juicy Hendrix riffs.

I’ll be over here checking to see if my heart is healthy enough to stand extra innings in Game Seven after my beloved Cubs blew a three-run lead in the eighth. If you don’t see anything posted tomorrow…

Saturday Night Excitement!

The Long-Suffering Wife: “If you feel like taking a walk, there’s garbage.”

Me: “I love it when you talk sexy!” (Goes to take out the trash.)
Let’s just assume we were giddy & short on oxygen after cheering for my beloved Cubbies.

Oh, apropos nada, there were neat clouds at sunset!

Adventurous Panorama – August 12th

On an adventure, busy, busy, busy, busy.

Don’t worry, taking LOTS of pictures, you’ll have to look at a lot of them later.

In the meantime, here’s a sample panorama from today to whet your appetite.

That was one freaking awesome thunderstorm that opened up during the pregame ceremonies!

What is this water falling from the sky and is that one of the reasons we’re being forced to chew our air before breathing it?

Expand Your Mind, They Said

Well, it got expanded all right!

Last night, while my meat puppet shell was in a seat in Section 149, Row L at Dodger Stadium, my consciousness was pretty solidly in the Von Kármán Auditorium at JPL, roughly twelve miles to the northeast as the (three-eyed) raven flies.

The Long-Suffering Wife was insightful enough to point out that I had become one of those people I detest – someone who’s at a ballgame with friends or family but on their cell phone constantly, oblivious to the game, the score, or any possible incoming foul balls. As for the latter, I was fine since there were a couple of young ladies sitting in front of us, probably something like eight and ten years old, and both had their gloves and meant business. Nothing was getting by those two!

I’m glad to report that the Dodger Stadium wi-fi is indeed much improved. It does however, as Murphy would predict, get flaky and start dropping out about five minutes before the Juno engine burn started. I was watching NASA-TV off and on up until then, tweeting and re-tweeting comments from the NASA Social attendees who were at JPL. (None of them took me up on my offer, obviously.) Then the wi-fi started to lock up and lag.

It’s for situations like this that I’ve kept that grandfathered unlimited data plan on my iPhone come hell or high water.

As we all know, Juno performed like a champ, hitting her mark just one second off schedule after travelling more than three billion miles through space in five years.

As people have pointed out, the next time a politician tries to tell you that they’re going to “make America great again,” point out Juno, Cassini, the Hubble Space Telescope, Curiosity, and all of the other NASA and JPL spacecraft currently up there. We’re already pretty freakin’ great!

After Juno was safely in orbit and had successfully spun down and turned back to face the sun, I looked up and found that the Dodgers were winning. The fireworks were pretty good too.

How was your Fourth of the July?

Multitasking On The Fourth

Okay, everybody remember that Juno arrives at Jupiter tonight! If your fireworks got rained out, or were yesterday (what’s up with that?), or are already over, or you’re not in the US and you’re just thinking that we’re especially wacked out today (BTW, you’re correct!), then hunker down in front of NASA TV and watch the show!

If you don’t have NASA TV on your cable or satellite system, or your fireworks are going on simultaneously and you don’t want to miss them, or you’re going to be at a ballgame (like we are), then watch it on your phone or computer or tablet or your freakin’ Apple Watch! C’mon folks, we’re in the 23rd Century here! (Actually, I don’t know if you can watch it on your Apple Watch. You should be able to on general principles alone – just sayin’.)

My thoughts will be will all of the thousands of folks across the globe that have worked for decades on this mission. Tonight’s one of the true do-or-die moments, with very, very little room for error.

To all of my fellow NASA Social tweeps at JPL, a few short miles from Dodger Stadium, where I’ll be – I’ll be watching, keep up the great work! And just on the off chance that any of you were thinking, “Damn, I really wanted to see that game tonight and the fireworks, but now I’m stuck being at JPL!” I have some nice seats on the third base side I could trade…

Head at JPL and Jupiter, body at Dodger Stadium watching some of this (these are from July 4th 2006 at Dodger Stadium):

Things I Have Learned At My First Angels Game Of The Year

Angels Stadium remains a beautiful park.
The Younger Daughter is Queen of the Photobombs. Especially when the bombee is the lady who gave her a dirty look earlier when she yelled a Monty Python curse.

The crowds are tad sparse this year, especially for a Saturday night with fireworks to follow.
My daughter’s blue car looks purple due to the redshift as she passes us in the carpool lane.

It’s a good thing that baseball food is zero calories and zero carbs!!

At least it will be much easier than normal getting out of the parking lot tonight.

While the wi-fi at the stadium is much, MUCH improved, the PA system (at least in the nosebleed seats) still sounds like Charlie Brown’s teacher.

The replay system this year could still use some improvements, both in speed and in accuracy.

I have a fitted baseball cap. With this übershort haircut, it’s too big (or, more accurately, my head’s too small) so it sits down on my head so far it rests on my ears, making it difficult to put my glasses on or take them off.

I absolutely HATE blown saves!

The Trip In From The Bullpen

My brain sometimes spits out some odd thoughts and observations at random times. (“Phut-teewey!” “Oooh, gross, it’s sticking to the ceiling!”)

Watching the ballgame tonight, there was a shot of a pitcher coming in from the bullpen. As he was leaving the bullpen gate in the outfield wall, you could see in the gloom behind him a couple of golf carts, no doubt used by the groundskeeping staff. And it hit me…

…didn’t the pitchers used to always ride in from the bullpen on golf carts? Like, back in the old days, when I was a kid and dirt was young?

When did that stop? I remember it sort of being a thing where there were a couple of relief pitchers who made a name for themselves by sprinting in from the outfield instead of using the cart. It was attention-getting, because everyone used the golf cart!

Some stadiums had unique and occasionally bizarre golf carts. Wasn’t it the Mets in Shea Stadium that had one shaped like a huge baseball?

So here we are in 2016 and it suddenly occurs to me, like the dog that didn’t bark, that I can’t remember when I saw anyone not walking or running in from the bullpen.

Are there any stadiums still offering the use of the golf cart?

If not, when did the last one give up the ghost and get given to the grounds crew?

And what else disappeared from the scene like that when we weren’t I wasn’t paying attention?

You think about that and get back to me. I’m going to go clean that spot on the ceiling.

Opening Day

It’s opening day for my two favorite baseball teams – the bad news is that they were playing each other. I guess the good news is that I had to be at least half happy with the result.

Baseball has a special place in my heart, having played the game as a kid and having coached my kids in it as an adult. I have many happy memories from my childhood of games seen in Kansas City’s old Municipal Stadium. The A’s weren’t very good, but it was always fun, and there were a lot of weekend double headers.

As an adult, I’ve had a lot of fun going to games in Anaheim (and occasionally in Chavez Ravine) with wives, kids, family, and friends. We still do – do a search for the “LA Angels” tag and you can find plenty of posts. When we travel we try to hit major and minor league parks for a game, and if the Angels are playing against the locals, so much the better. Fenway, Comisky, Safeco – we’ve followed them from one side of the country to the other.

If we need some background noise while working on something, there’s nothing better than a baseball game. There’s a rhythm, a cadence to a baseball broadcast, something that also harkens back to childhood. In the early 1960’s we didn’t have every game on television like we do today. We were lucky to get one game a week, and it rarely was our team. There was no such thing as a local broadcast station or network. If you weren’t there, you listened on the radio. I did a LOT of listening on the radio.

Even now, on a long cross-country trip in the summer, there’s nothing better at night than to pull in some far away broadcast on a clear-channel station. On a good night in the desert you can hear games from San Francisco, Phoenix, Seattle, Denver, Houston. When my family first moved to Vermont and I was missing my friends, my music, and my Cubbies, on a good night I could pull in the broadcast for a few minutes before it faded out.

Not every game’s a gem. It truly is a long season. But that’s part of it all.

I grew up with the game and my kids did as well. I may have screwed up a few things as a parent, but that wouldn’t be one of them. The Youngest Daughter was at opening night in Anaheim tonight with her boyfriend. We’ve been to a lot of home openers, but it was not to be for me tonight. But it’s great to have spring training over, the games counting, and hope springing eternal.

Losing 9-0 in the bottom of the ninth? We’ve got ’em right where we want ’em! It’s hero time!
