Whack Jobs

I found this snippet that I wrote two weeks ago and then set aside, deciding that it was one of those things that was good to write and get off my chest, but probably not appropriate for a part of that evening’s post.

I’m not sure exactly why I didn’t just delete it – there’s no doubt something subconscious going on. Something like my muse being smarter than I am, or at least more insightful.

It was a relatively small thing that happened and by no means whatsoever do I think that it’s even 1% of 1% of 1% of the harassment and abuse that many people (primarily women and people of color and LGBQT folk and so on – go figure!) get online just for existing. I am absolutely in awe of the people who put up with death threats, doxxing, rape threats, swatting, and so much more, yet still keep telling their stories and fighting for their rights. I don’t know that I could do that, especially with 60+ years of white, male, middle class, Catholic (recovering!) privilege ingrained into my cells.

I’m not being denied any rights nor do I have to defend my existence – I’m just not terribly good at suffering idiots or keeping my peace when confronted with fucking idiots. (See flat Earthers, moon landing deniers, anti-vaxx crusaders, and my new favorite, climate change deniers.) Occasionally I can’t hold it in with some particularly egregious morons. I don’t ever expect any of these ideological fanatics to listen to me and say, “Oh, wow, thanks for pointing out those facts, I’ll change my mind now!” But if they spout bullshit online and no one challenges them, if no one points out the actual facts and gives references to the evidence, then their delusional fantasies and conspiracy theories can grow and gain life. I can take a few seconds here and there to cast a blow or two against the Rise of Stupidity.

So…

A general note for everyone, especially those following me on Twitter – if you try to convince me that climate change is fake or, worse yet, actually a conspiracy by the U.N. to take over the U.S., I may or may not mock you mercilessly and point out that you’re in need of psychiatric help or that you’re lacking an IQ that’s bigger than your shoe size, and then I will block you forever and with extreme prejudice. Life is way, WAY too short to put up with batshit crazy people like that. And if you then sic your followers on me to start sending me “proof” of your whackjob bullshit theories, I’ll block them too. I’ll do it so fast that I probably won’t even take the time to tell them to fuck off first. Again, life’s too short.

And now you know!

No Context For You – September 14th

Some days you need it more than others – some days I don’t even know if it’s helping.

We made it through another week. We made it through another Saturday. We’re still upright, taking nourishment, on the right side of the dirt.

That’s a win in anyone’s book.

REALLY Full Tonight

And I got out the good camera for the occasion.

Remember I said you could see Griffith Observatory? It’s over to the right from this view. This is the big peak in Griffith Park, with the Hollywood sign just on the far side to the right of that radio/TV tower. (Click on the image to view it full sized.)

Ooooh, looky what I found! Just five hours short of full, that’s about 99.99% illuminated and coming up through the evening haze.

Play with the exposure time and you get some detail, craters and “oceans.”

Remember that hill and radio tower?

You could almost reach out and touch it.

Pull back a little bit and you can see the lights coming on across the San Fernando Valley.

Looking for the owl. (Didn’t see, or hear, him.)

Is that a dot in the upper left, at about the 10:00 position? No, that would be a plane taking off out of Burbank! I was shooting a series of bracketed shots and you can clearly see the plane coming up from the lower left, going in front of the moon…

…and then taking off a bit to the upper right before looping back around to cross over Van Nuys Airport and head north toward Northern California or the Pacific Northwest. (I’ve taken that takeoff many a time!)

Lots of hubbub online about “a full moon on Friday the Thirteenth!!” Give me a break. Just enjoy the beautiful moon and the view – you don’t need anything more than that.

Luna Rising

Do you see it?

Way out there, on the horizon. If you have binoculars you can see Griffith Observatory. Right over it.

It’s not quite full – that’s still fifteen hours away, at 21:33 PDT. But it’s 99% illuminated, so the casual observer wouldn’t notice.

The the naked eye it leaps out at you – the iPhone camera takes a bit of coaxing to reveal it. Then again, the iPhone camera didn’t evolve over a few hundred million years out in the Serengeti, where the light of the full moon could give an advantage to predator – or prey.

It’s cleared the hills down there in the haze.

99%? Close enough.

Time to howl!

First Do No Harm

Fog.

Confused. Lost. Angry. Frustrated. Directionless.

Maybe it’s the anniversary. Maybe it’s today’s news. Maybe it’s all of that and more.

It’s a roller coaster. Some long-term battles have been won. Some decisions and deadlines are coming like a runaway freight train.

What to do?

Take a deep breath. Pause. Nothing needs to be done this second. Let the gut unclench a bit. A memory comes. A piece of advice, shining dimly through the fog of confusion like the most distant of beacons.

“First – do no harm.”

So instead of angst & fog and confusion, let’s share some pictures from our Sunday BBQ. It was a nice gathering. There were some old favorites and some new adventures on the grill. The gas held out juuuuuuuuust long enough to finish.

It all came out well, even the adventures. More experimentation and experience is needed on the tri-tip. Practice, practice, practice.

The season started to the sacred BBQ vestments were brought out of storage. I was having a good time…

…and not thinking about fog. Or the news. Or decisions.

Somewhere in the middle is a path.

Somewhere in the fog.

From The Ridiculous…

I had some CAF documents to knock out tonight and there was a shortage of good background video to have on. The Angels were on YouTube instead of a good, God-fearing, American cable channel like real baseball should be — I have no idea what’s good on regular television any more — and I just couldn’t bring myself to watch a Hallmark Christmas movie on demand.

Flipping through the various premium channels, I found the last hour or so of “Armageddon.” Have I told you how terribly godawful horrible that movie is? It’s not even the ridiculously bad science, even for a special effects extravaganza summer blockbuster piece of fluff. The story sucks. The science sucks. The special effects are big and flashy but so stupid that even they suck.

Fortunately, after that I was able to find the Disney version of “Into The Woods,” which I have never seen. That would be the sublime follow-up to “Armageddon.”

As much as I love the original, and would absolutely kill to see it live on stage, the Disney version is more than just a bit sanitized, especially in the second act. The original play, in addition to the marvelous and beautiful music (some of which has been deleted from this version), the play is dark and people get what they deserve, which is often death. That’s all sort of whitewashed, as is the Prince’s infidelity.

I enjoyed it, but I’m going to have to go back and watch the real version again soon.

Following that, “The Princess Bride” came on.

I got my CAF stuff done and emailed out, but I might not get to bed on time tonight. (We’re just getting to where we need to find Miracle Max.)

Wait, I Posted “Adult Content”??!!

This morning I got an email from Tumblr.

The problem I’m having with the hallucinations is that they’re apparently not the “fun” or “colorful” kind – they’re the ones where I go wild and crazy and post adult content on my site but don’t remember it.

Wait – do I even HAVE a Tumblr account? Half wondering if this was some very clever and sophisticated phishing scheme, I clicked on the link to see what “adult content” I had posted.

C’mon, folks!! Even if I hadn’t been wearing pants when my phone went rogue, this STILL wouldn’t have been “adult content!” “Objectionable,” sure. “Disgusting,” possibly. “Nauseating,” without a doubt. But “adult”???

So I disputed the characterization and figured I would get a decision in about three weeks. Maybe.

Three seconds (literally) later, I got this.

Wow, I feel much safer now. Don’t you?

The Wisdom Of “Dune”

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” – Frank Herbert, “Dune”

I distinctly remember reading “Dune” for the first time. I was a high school senior and took a college-level night English literature class that focused on science fiction classics. I remember being just totally blown away by the scope and sweeping story line, but also with some of the more philosophical concepts and the detailed politics and strategies between the different factions.

The quote above was always the best and most memorable of all.

These days, fifty-four years after publication, you can get it on T-shirts and memes – in high school you could order posters of it to hang next to my Led Zeppelin posters.

Fear has its place. There are lots of things in life that are worthy of fear – hopefully most of us don’t encounter them on a regular basis.

Irrational, unnecessary fears are a problem. Too many of us (myself included) can get slowed down, even paralyzed into inaction at times, tied up in knots over fears of what might or might not happen in the immediate or near future.

Courage and confidence can be overwhelmed by such fears. The mind can believe us to be helpless when we are not. The gut can get twisted into knots when there’s no immediate danger, or even true danger in the short term. Problems? Yes, up to our asses in alligators some times. Danger and crises? No, they’re not real alligators, it’s just a figure of speech.

There may be problems at work, at school, with our health, with our families, and they may be serious. Are they an actual “DANGER” this minute? Today? Next week? If not, why be tied up and wasting all of that nervous energy today?

And we’re usually not without resources, not without alternatives, not without options. Sure, getting from here to a better place might well involve a gauntlet of truly torturous ordeals – but that doesn’t mean that we can’t get there. And if we’re already being tortured on a daily basis just dealing with our current day-in, day-out shit, isn’t the better long term plan to be working through those ordeals toward a better place.

The gut doesn’t always agree or understand. But the head needs to remember. Don’t let fear dominate. Let it pass through you. And then move on, with the head in control, not the gut.

At least, that’s the plan and good advice!

My Leg

Today started out pretty much where yesterday left off.

That’s not good.

It was a “busier than God” sort of day on top of it, and a long 11+ hours at the hanger.

That’s not necessarily good.

Then when I got home there was craziness from the job site.

That wasn’t good at all.

But I was stubborn. I kept moving. I made it out the other side and might have made some progress.

That’s good. Finally.

I have no idea why my cell phone camera decided to take a burst of 22 photos of my leg while I was driving.

Paper Or Plastic?

They say one should never make a decision in anger. (They also apparently say you should never make a promise when happy, but that sounds like bullshit.)

Tonight, I shouldn’t be allowed to answer the question that titles this post.

I know it will pass. But like Spock in the first JJ Abrams “Star Trek” after Kirk finally gets under his skin (and his planet and millions of his people including his mother have been killed – details) I’m probably better off counting backwards from 1,000 in German.

That’s what an adult would do.
