Cloud Activity

I absolutely love the time lapse photography functions built into the iPhone. Add it to a rare day in LA where there’s a bit of weather moving through…

Now if I could just figure out how to get ride of the reflections off the inside of the windows. (There’s a “bar” across the top of the image about a fifth of the way down – that’s the top of the file cabinet the camera was tilted up against.)

Still, nice clouds. Next maybe some lightning? Please?

No Context For You – February 26th

Still here. Well, not here, but here.

Has anyone ever worked as a lifeguard? I’m seeing a meme going around on Twitter and FaceBook which says that a key rule (the first rule?) of being a lifeguard is to always remember that you have to save yourself in order to save anyone else.

It sounds kitschy and cliched, but it has enough of a ring of truth to it to make me wonder.

Any past or present Wendy Peffercorn types who can either confirm or deny?

Noisy Visitor (Video)

Yesterday we had a Navy/Marine T-45 visiting. I mentioned it was noisy. Mind you, some of our WWII planes can get a bit loud, but this is a whole new level.

I set my phone on the ground about twenty feet behind the jet. Note the spray of debris at the 0:30 mark.

Five minutes or so later the jet was waiting for clearance to take off. While they were waiting, someone in a Cessna 172 pulled up behind them to wait their turn next, a position that I thought might be ill advised. You’ll see after the cut, about four minutes later in real time (there were a lot of other planes landing), someone in the tower must have suggested a different course of action.

I love the sound of Jet-A being turned into noise!

Noisy Visitor

My usual Saturday out at the CAF SoCal hangar in Camarillo. We had a somewhat rare and unusual visitor on the ramp.

A great-great-grandchild of sorts to our PT-19 trainer and the SNJ trainer that followed, the T-45 trainer is used today to teach naval aviators how to fly jets.

It says “Navy” on this side and “Marines” on the other – same difference to a certain extent, both are “naval aviators” and trained to take off and land from aircraft carriers. Note the launch hook sticking out from the front of the nose wheel, and the retracted tailhook at the rear. The T-45 is what today’s naval aviator is flying when he or she does his or her first carrier landings.

This would be a fun ride! I wouldn’t even need to be in the front seat!

There’s a whole bunch of “remove before flight” flags while it’s parked.

Not just for show, eventually they had to leave to go back to El Centro where they’re based.

Up close and personal, it’s really, really loud! (Video tomorrow if I get a few minutes to clean it up and edit a bit.)

Curling

I can’t believe that I’m up at nearly midnight watching live Olympic curling.

I’ve learned enough of the rules to be dangerous and I know enough (I think; I probably don’t) to recognize a really good shot.

Strategy? Yeah, let’s not go crazy here.

When I was a kid I never imagined myself as a a rebel or a wild & crazy guy – I was never going to be Peter Fonda in “Easy Rider.” At the other extreme, I never saw myself watching guys slide forty-seven pound rocks a hundred and fifty feet down the ice to bump the other guys’ rocks off of the button and out of the house.

On the other hand, after the two weeks (or two months, or eight) that I’ve had, sitting on my ass for a couple of hours and doing nothing more mentally complex than watching guys slide forty-seven pound rocks a hundred and fifty feet down the ice to bump the other guys’ rocks off of the button and out of the house is wonderful.

Salvation vs Torture

I’m pretty sure I’ve ranted about this before, but it happened again today, so here we go:

When a picture like this shows up on your desktop lock screen (it’s Bora Bora) is it a breath of fresh air and a moment of calm and peace in your potentially stressful, hectic, and super busy day? Or is it a freaking instrument of torture, taunting you with visions of a relaxing, beautiful, peaceful oasis that you will never, ever get to at any time in your pathetic, wretched existence, even if you live to see the heat death of the universe?

As they say, “Asking for a friend.”

Adulting STILL Sucks

A couple of times today, many more times than I would like to remember over the last couple of weeks, conversations have gotten to the point where either “Okay!” or “Fuck you!” are the proper next response – along with the resulting consequences.

I have consistently been doing that whole responsible, mature adulting thing.

An argument can be made that I’m making the wrong decisions.

Tomorrow’s another day to be a mature, responsible adult. And wonder if the moment’s coming when I’m not.

No Context For You – February 20th

Still here.

Three of the Labours of Hercules complete (more or less). More to start working on tomorrow.

The problem, unlike running a marathon, is that I’m not sure where the finish line is, how far away, or even if there *IS* a finish line.

That makes it all a bit more…challenging.

Heard In My Head

After being up way too late last night finishing up the CAF financials for today’s audit, I was up two hours early this morning to get out to Camarillo on time. As I’m coming out of the bathroom after showering and preparing to face the ordeal:

The Long Suffering Wife: “You can turn on the light.”

Me: “What if I don’t want to turn on the light? What if I’m still upset with the light over that little tiff and I’m not speaking to her, let alone trying to turn her on? What if I don’t care if the light ever gets turned on again? Serves her right after that little ‘tete-e-tete’ the light had with Rex, and while she says that it was just innocent word play, *I* saw how they were looking at each other and *I* know that it was much, much more than that! So I will NOT be turning on the light any time soon! Let the little minx just stew on that for a while – she knows where to find me when she’s ready to apologize!”

Well, at least that’s the way it played out in my head. Not sure if any of the drama or counterfeit angst actually made it past my larynx. I was pretty tired.

Abandonment

It’s been said that a novel is never finished, only abandoned. The same is no doubt true of financial statements if you’re a particularly anal retentive sort of accounting person – and if you’re an accounting person, you are.

I’m done. Let the Spanish Inquisition begin!
