Discombobulated Again

Some days…

I don’t even remember what got me off balance to begin with, but about the time I hit my office door this morning I realized that I had left the house without breakfast, and more importantly, without my Diet Coke.

That’s one of the differences between the new office and the old – there are a lot more people in the new office and the kitchen refrigerator is pretty much the same size. So my habit of leaving a six-pack or more is somewhat less than practical. But when I forget to bring one in…

So at lunch, after dealing (more or less successfully) with a number of “challenges,” I went out to find a grocery store.

Which was easy enough. One cold Diet Coke from the freezer section, a couple of six packs to stick in my office, some granola bars for those times when I get a bit hangry…

Only to realize that my wallet was in my coat pocket while my coat was still hanging on the back of the chair back in my office. It had been chilly and foggy when I left home, but by lunchtime it was not. I think that the look on my face said everything to the poor guy at the checkout register.

A quick search of the car showed that there was extremely little cash onboard – I’m *SO* glad that I cleaned it out a couple of weeks ago and dumped that $30+ in loose change into the CoinStar machine! I had just enough to stop at a gas station and pick up a single cold Diet Coke for lunch…

…at which point my shoelace broke while walking back across the parking lot.

So, the laughter might have had a tinge of hysteria at that point.

Hangry, under caffeinated, gimpy with a jury rigged shoelace, I carried on and made it through the day.

How did your day go?

Funcle Paul & The Telescope

We still have family in town following the wedding, including a three-year-old who loves stars and moons and planets.

It would be amazing to clean and restore the big telescope and take it out to a dark sky location and show her a whole range of deep sky objects and nebulae and galaxies and globular clusters and telling her all about redshifts and spectroscopy and how Hubble figured out that the universe was so much more immense than anyone had ever dreamed possible and inspiring her for a whole life of wonder and exploration and love of science…

But she’s three.

So dragging the scope out onto the back porch with a dusty mirror in a light polluted city and showing her the crescent moon probably worked just as well.

I am the Funcle.

Flu Shot

Get one.

If you have a legitimate, scientific, medical reason to not get one, such as you’re allergic or you have a compromised immune system, then of course, you don’t have to.

But if you’re one of the 99.9999999% of the population who don’t have a legitimate, scientific, medical reason to not get a flu shot, then GET A FLU SHOT!!

If you don’t know why you should do that, aside from the fact that having the flu really sucks and you’ll feel terrible for days, or the fact that the flu still kills almost 80,000 people every year in the US alone and you could be one of them, then read this about how your getting a flu shot will also help everyone out there not get the flu.

And if you’re truly foolish and clueless enough to be reading my site and want to bring any anti-vaxx bullshit in here, well…

(Image “liberated” from somewhere on the Internet sometime in the past several months from someone I’ve never heard of because I really liked it. Isn’t that what the Internet is for?)

(P.S. – yes, I googled the image, found thousands of folks who have used the background image, a few dozen that have this version with the text, but NO ONE who has any clue who took the original image or made the text version. If your google-foo is stronger than mine and you can find a reliable credit for either version, please let me know in the comments and I’ll be happy to acknowledge it.)

P.P.S. – now that we’re done with that, go get a flu shot!!

I got mine yesterday. Lots of places, like Kaiser where I was killing time, have them for free. Your arm will hurt of about 1/3 of a second. It might be teeny, tiny bit sore in the morning.

GROW A SPINE! TOP IT OFF WITH A BRAIN! GET A FLU SHOT!!

Scattered Back On The Winds

Having gathered family and friends from the four corners of the globe (literally), with the festivities completed (and they WERE festive!) it was time today to scatter the children back on the winds.

The Older Daughter had to be back at work this morning in Northern California, so she made the long drive back last night.

I was up way too damn early to drive The Son to the airport, which not only completely played “52 Pick Up” with their pick up traffic (taxis, Uber, Lyft, etc are now off in an off-site lot which no one can find and no one can figure out how to get to or from) but which also appears to be 100% under construction.

Isn’t it iconic?

Then the Younger Daughter and her newly minted husband, The Son-In-Law, took off for their honeymoon.

So as we speak, one is in a plane to Asia near the end of an eleven-hour-plus flight, and the others are near the US/Canada border on their way to Europe.

And tomorrow I’m back to the office to play catch up after the long weekend.

Time to go looking for a new normal, a new routine. It’s been magnificent, but I really could use a little bit of boredom for a few weeks!

Party #3 With Babies & Virga

That was quite the wedding! A good time was truly had by all.

Today was the third party in three days, this time for The Long-Suffering Wife’s family.

Again the back yard in our entertainment-friendly home was pressed into service – again a good time was had by all. There were babies there as well, which explains the stroller/jumper that had been sitting in the living room (a serious source of conversation for those visiting for the first party!). In addition to the brunch and mimosas and champagne, there was T-ball, coloring books, and a little bit of poop.

There was also virga, much to my surprise.

Yesterday the amount and scope of the virga in the area was much, MUCH larger and we actually got some brief showers earlier in the day when I was taking people back and forth to the wedding venue. Imagine my surprise when, with 0.00% chance of rain in the forecast for the next ten days, we had to worry a bit about rain (it was a partially outdoor venue) when for weeks we had been worrying about the threat of fire.

Finally, did *I* have a good time at my daughter’s wedding?

(Photo taken by my brother-in-law)

You bet your ass I did!

(Yes, I also tied that bow tie all by myself, for better or for worse. Why do you ask?)

Now to get folks to the airport, back on the road home, or off to their next vacation destination. We’re in the home stretch!

Rehearsal Dinner

Which it really wasn’t, at least in the strictest sense of the term. There was no rehearsal for tomorrow’s wedding.

What it was was a chance for the bride and groom to spend time chilling and schmoozing with their friends and family, many of whom had come from out of town, out of state, or even out of the country. That mission was accomplished.

A good time was had by all.

We were more than happy to offer our place as a venue for the celebration. We do love how entertaining friendly this house is. It’s fun to make it happen, especially for our daughter and her fiancé.

Tomorrow – the big day.

Halloween 2019

It’s one night in particular when I miss the old house.

We always had hundreds of kids coming by. Families. Teenagers. Little kids. Pets.

If it was clear we always brought out the telescopes and let everyone take a look. It was magical.

No more. Last year I think we had a small handful of trick or treaters, a dozen at the most.

This year, not a single person stopped by. We’re at the top of the hill and off on a side street, but I didn’t even see anyone on any of the streets leading into our tract when I drove home.

Maybe it’s the fires. There’s another big one going off tonight, over 5,000 acres already in just a few hours. The “good” news for us is that it’s off in
Ventura County and doesn’t seem to be a threat to our wedding plans for Saturday.

Let the partying begin. Halloween’s over and was something of a bust (although we did have a fun Halloween lunch party at my new office!)…

…but the wedding weekend is going to be AWESOME!

Hello, November!

Let the partying begin!

More Fires

We’re safe. Nothing near our homes.

Nothing near Saturday’s wedding venue, although there have been two small brush fires that were in locations that could have exploded into Malibu Canyon. Fortunately, both were put out quickly and held to under 10 acres. The worst problem was some spectacularly lousy traffic on my commute home. (Remember that bottleneck I mentioned about the Calabasas Grade on the 101 Freeway? The small fires were on either side of that, one yesterday, one today, right in the heart of that pass.) Our undying thanks to the fire crews that jumped on those and saved us from a worst-case scenario.

There have been relatively few homes lost – just a few dozen across Southern California. Northern California is worse off.

But I’ve never seen the sheer number of fires all starting up at once. Watching the news where they were listing just the ones that were at least 30-40 acres up to 300-400 acres with freeways closed and evacuations ordered, there were at least seven or eight today. Plus the one by the Getty Museum from a few days ago that’s pushing 1,000 acres and is still burning. Plus the one that started this morning near the Reagan Museum (remember these views? – they were all on fire today, literally), surrounded the Library right up to the building perimeters, which is at 1,645 acres with 0% containment as of three hours ago.

And the winds are still howling. For 24 hours straight they’ve been blowing at 20-30 knots steadily with gusts much higher. And they’re expected to do that for another 24 hours – or more.

And all of the power outages are horrific, all over the state. The killer part is that the power companies, Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison, are shutting off the power for days at a time to millions of people and leaving them totally stranded with spoiled food, disabled people left in life-threatening conditions, businesses and schools shut down, lost wages… And they’re doing it to “prevent” more fires, which would be caused by their shoddy, ill-maintained power lines.

Yet several of the local fires look like they were started by…failures of shoddy, ill-maintained power lines.

These idiots are shutting off the power AFTER the fires start to try to prevent the fires from starting.

Even if we can’t get the morons of our society to accept the reality of climate change, can we get them to accept that time travel isn’t possible, no matter how bad they feel about the legal liability of being complete screw ups?

They’re Coming To Take Me Away!

And not to Isengard! (Seriously, I’m short, but I’m not THAT short!)

Actually, I think it’s the Morlocks coming for me, tunneling through the yard and waiting to grab me by the ankles as I walk to my car, dragging me down under the ground to a horrific fate!

I hear the air raid sirens starting! Or is it the wind?
