The Airshow Working Me

As much as I might be in (serious, world-class, overwhelming, all-encompassing) denial about getting older, I might be getting too old for this shit.

Another lovely day, albeit another 13 hour plus day. First thing tomorrow, starting the week a half lap or more behind on sleep, the new week starts.

How was your weekend?

Working The Airshow

Working the airshow is not quite as much fun as just going to an airshow. But it was a good day, even if I did have a 15 hour day there.

Tomorrow will probably be another 12+ hour day, so if you’re in SoCal, feel free to come out and say howdy!

Gates ooen at 10:00, flying starts at noon and goes until about 16:30. If you’re there, wander by the CAF hangars & chat. Don’t sweat finding me – just ask anyone working at any of the CAF booths there and they’ll track me down.

See you there, maybe?

A Whiff Of Testosterone

The local private (expensive) high school is back in session. There’s something going on there tonight.

I was watching the young bucks, cruising the mostly empty streets in their daddies’ high priced, high powered cars, desperately overcompensating for whatever shortcoming it is they’re overcompensating for.

They roar down the long, straight street, burning rubber, sailing through the stop sign at about 50 mph. Once past, they slam on the brakes to skid to a halt, practicing their bootlegger turns, then roaring back to do doughnuts in the intersection, before finally burning rubber back the way they came.

Alcohol is almost certainly involved.

After the first three or four do it some of the wonder leaks away as a spectator and I’m left to simply speculate on which one is going to pick off a cinder block wall with Daddy’s BMW and which one is going to be the moron left holding the bag and doing doughnuts when the cops show up.

But my favorite of them all tonight, the one that’s got my vote as “Most Likely To Be A Darwin Award Winner,” is the dude who did all of this in Daddy’s Jaguar – with the left turn light blinking the whole time. There’s a certain bizarre nature to someone who’s that ignorant, distracted, and oblivious to the turn signal being on as they drive mile after mile without even thinking of turning. (“What’s that clickin’ noise?”) To see someone that lacking in situational awareness then go out and actively try to wrap himself and his friends around a tree at high speed?

It’s not a thing of beauty, nor is it all that rare in these parts, but it is a thing that makes you think some discouraging thoughts about the future of our society.

A Certain Lack Of Trust

Out for my late evening stroll (two and a half miles) I was about two blocks from home tonight when I spotted one of my old nemeses. It was digging for grubs in a yard two houses down from me, a good sized critter, black, bushy tail held high, with that bright white stripe prominently displayed.

I was going to simply cross the street to give it a wide berth, but the skunk started toward the street instead and I froze. I’ve read that they have lousy vision, which was fine  by me. It waddled across the street and started digging for grubs in that yard.

Down the street was walking a man with two dogs on leashes. He had moved out into the street and over to my side. I was watching the skunk to make sure it didn’t do anything rash, as well as to see if there might be a mate or baby skunks wandering about. As my neighbor got next to me he asked, “Was that what I think it was?”

“If you think it was a skunk, then, yes, it was,” I said.

He reined in the leashes on his dogs, which were now picking up the scent (the skunk had not sprayed, but still…) and getting excited. He moved on past me and I started toward home again.

As I got to the corner to turn for home, another man rounded the corner with two large dogs. I stopped him and gave him the heads up that a potential major problem lie just down at the next corner.

He was incredulous. “A skunk? Here? In the city?”

He must be new to the area, because we can smell them once or twice a month, even though seeing them is more rare. I assured him that I was dead serious, noting that running into a skunk while walking the dogs would most certainly ruin his day.

“Yeah, right,” was all I got for my efforts. He moved off down the sidewalk.

I crossed the street and headed for home. As I got halfway down the block I heard dogs start to bark and could clearly hear a man’s voice yelling, “OH, SHIT!”By the time I got home the first whiffs of Eau d’Skunk were wafting across the neighborhood.

In the stereotypical big city suburban neighborhood where the assumption is that no one knows their neighbors’ names even after living next to them for twenty years, I tried to be friendly and outgoing. You know – “neighborly.” Our now-stinky friend should have had a bit more trust.

Karma, man! It’s a real bitch.

(P.S. – For the record, we do know most of our neighbors’ names for at least the first two or three houses, with one notable exception. Further down the block, if we don’t know the name of the neighbor, we at least know the name of their dog.)

Out Of The Frying Pan

You may have noticed that The Long-Suffering Wife and I were on vacation in New York City for the last eight days. It was pretty much a “go, Go, GO!!” trip, trying to hit as many first-time tourist spots as possible in one of the largest tourist traps on the planet.

All good things must end. Today it was back to the real world, the office, and everything that had occurred back at the office during those eight days. The good news is that I have a fantastic team there (great job, Esther and Hazel!) and while today was a bit frantic, there weren’t any crises to speak of.

One might think that I would be grateful for a “short week” since I was off in the Big Apple on Monday and Tuesday. But that’s not to be. As busy (and occasionally exhausting) as the road days were, this upcoming weekend will be as frantic or more so.

It’s time for this year’s “Wings Over Camarillo” airshow! (Previous years’ pictures here, here, here, here, here, and here.)

With the Southern California Wing of the Commemorative Air Force being both a major sponsor of the show as well as one of the lead performing groups (at last check we’ll be flying the PT-19, the SNJ-5, the Hellcat, the Bearcat, the Zero, the Spitfire, and the PBJ (flying at her first airshow). The Mustang is currently down for repairs, but will be there to gawk at, sans engine.

With my volunteer role as Finance Officer for the CAF SoCal Wing, I’ll be extremely busy all weekend.

So much for the theory which says, “I’ll catch up on my sleep when I get back from vacation.” Somehow “I’ll catch up on my sleep ten days or so after I get back from vacation, put in long hours at the office, and then put in eighteen-hour days all weekend” doesn’t quite roll off the tongue the same way.

Don’t worry. I’ll take lots of pictures to share. Sometime after I get caught up on my sleep.

Adventurous Panorama – August 16th

On an adventure, busy, busy, busy, busy.

Don’t worry, taking LOTS of pictures, you’ll have to look at a lot of them later.

In the meantime, here’s a sample panorama from today to whet your appetite.

Home again, home again, jiggity jig!

This was a GREAT vacation!

Tomorrow, back to the “real world,” i.e. work, both at my day job & at my volunteer CAF gig.

Farewell, New York! I can’t wait to come back!

Here we come, Los Angeles! You’ll be stuck with us again!

On the left, Chinatown. On the right, Little Italy. Take your pick. Either way, you can eat until you explode and then ask for seconds.

Über cool to be there at 22:30 on a Saturday night after seeing a FREAKIN’ OUTSTANDING performance of “Beautiful” – even if it was still 91°F and 55% humidity.

Who can spot The Long-Suffering Wife?
